Arsenal wanted to sign Martinez

Arsenal made a late approach to sign Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez before the transfer deadline, according to The Daily Mail.

The Gunners signed just one forward in Christos Tzolis this summer, but they also had plans to bring in a marquee attacking player.

Morgan Rogers was the initial target, but he ultimately joined the Blues. Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior emerged as a lucrative option soon after, but the Gunners could not convince him to leave Los Blancos.

Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez was likewise considered by the Gunners, but the World Cup winner made it clear that he only wanted to join Barcelona.

The Daily Mail now claim that assistant manager Gabriel Heinze made personal contact with Martinez to convince him to make a move.

However, Inter came up with a firm response that their club captain was not for sale at any price before the transfer deadline on Tuesday.

Hence, Arsenal ended the window without a marquee forward signing.
