Saliba out for extended period with back injury

Arsenal have confirmed that William Saliba will be sidelined for an extended period following his back injury at the World Cup this summer.

The centre-back sustained the setback during France’s World Cup semi-final against Spain, and he was substituted in the 30th minute.

Saliba was initially backed to undergo surgery for his concern, but the Gunners have revealed that the defender won’t go under the knife.

The club added that the 25-year-old will instead commence a managed recovery programme and will be out for an extended period next term.

Saliba’s setback could speed up the Gunners’ pursuit of a new centre-back. Aston Villa‘s Ezri Konsa is reportedly the prime target for the club.

There is currently a massive valuation gap between Arsenal and Villa. While the Gunners value him at £35m, Villa are holding out for £60m.

Talks are still ongoing behind the scenes. Konsa has given the green light to join the Gunners, provided they can reach an agreement with Villa.
