Arkham Knight Just Got The Next-Gen Remaster Gotham Deserves

Batman: Arkham Knight is not only the best game in the trilogy, but also the greatest showcase of how Batman works perfectly in a video game context. Rocksteady’s adaptation of the Caped Crusader has always been fantastic, but Arkham Knight, for all its flaws at launch, feels like the pinnacle of what the studio has to offer. With a truly great narrative, a legendary performance from the late, great Kevin Conroy, and stunning visuals that largely hold up today, Arkham Knight is a must-play Batman game for any self-respecting fan.

That being said, there were those aforementioned wrinkles at launch, bugs and poorly handled features that let down the overall package. That’s not to say that Batman: Arkham Knight is a bad game, as that couldn’t be further from the truth. In 2026, the game has also received several updates, and the huge slew of amazing Batman: Arkham Knight mods have helped iron out any other kinks. However, it’s safe to say that a next-gen remaster couldn’t hurt Arkham Knight, and, thankfully, it has gotten the one it truly deserves. Kind of.

There are definitive editions of Batman: Arkham Knight out there, although none have been officially released by Warner Bros. Despite being a huge success both critically and commercially, and in desperate need of an enhanced version on the Nintendo Switch, Warner Bros. hasn’t done anything with Arkham Knight since launch, leaving it to languish on last-gen systems. That’s a shame, as while visually it still absolutely holds up, there is a lot that a remaster could offer that Arkham Knight could definitely benefit from.

Fortunately, fans have showcased what Batman: Arkham Knight would look like were it to get the official next-gen remaster it deserves. They have done this using the incredibly controversial DLSS 5 technology that has been making headlines lately. This tech, while not inherently terrible, has produced mixed results, to say the least, with JRPGs fairing rather terribly from its AI-powered rendering filter. Just recently, Assassin’s Creed 2 was butchered by DLSS 5, proving that it truly is limited, even with titles in desperate need of a visual overhaul like that.

However, in the case of Arkham Knight, the DLSS 5 filter works. This is largely because Arkham Knight already looks great, so there isn’t much left for DLSS 5 to improve. In the vast majority of cases where DLSS 5 has worked, it has been on games that already sport a photorealistic aesthetic, or at least not a heavily stylized one like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. With Arkham Knight, the filter enhances the game’s lighting and shadows, producing a more realistic Gotham that doesn’t sacrifice the gritty atmosphere or style present in the original experience.

It is use cases like these that best illustrate DLSS 5’s place in the industry. Heavily stylized games, or titles where the protagonist’s face is on show, don’t really benefit from what is generously being referred to as the DLSS 5 AI slop filter. In those cases, the filter tries to make the character look more realistic and, absurdly, more beautiful, resulting in them looking entirely AI-generated. In Batman: Arkham Knight’s case, where Bruce’s face is covered, it works, giving us a glimpse of what a true remaster would look like should Warner Bros. ever decide to create one.
