There is an upcoming Apple TV show based on an acclaimed novel that is part-Taken and part-No Country for Old Men, and if you were fans of either of those films, this series could be right in your wheelhouse. The Western action genre is getting a new entry on September 9, 2026.

Apple TV has an exciting slate of shows coming in the next couple of months, with Lucky​​​​​​ in July, Nocturne in October, and several series without set dates but which are no less exciting, like The Savant and The Off Weeks, likely arriving before the year is out. The streamer has had a strong 2026, which it hopes to continue.

One such series that could stand up alongside Widow’s Bay and Margo’s Got Money Troubles is Last Seen, a TV series set to debut in September and based on The Dispatcher, a 2011 novel from author Ryan David Jahn. It’s a six-part series set in Australia and was written by Kris Mrksa. Filming took place in Australia in 2025 (via Deadline).

In the series, former police detective Ian Hunt (Patrick Brammall) is a grieving father whose daughter Maggie disappeared 10 years before the start of the show. Now a police dispatcher, Ian is stunned when he receives a distress call from someone who sounds terribly like his daughter, putting him on a quest to save whoever was on the line.

It has the Taken aspects of a father put on the hunt for his daughter due to a suspicious phone call, and the No Country for Old Men aspects of a lawman crossing an unforgiving desert for a desperate hope that might not be coming. Last Seen is not totally unfamiliar, but it could prove an exciting entry in the Western thriller canon.

Last Seen Will Bridge The Western And Action Thriller Genres

Last Seen could be the latest TV show to bridge the action thriller and Western genres. While most Westerns have their share of action, that feature of the genre is supplementary to the themes of individualism, freedom, justice, and subjugation. It’s neo-Westerns, like Justified, that dabble more in gun-slinging and chases.

Last Seen is another example of this kind of neo-Western, where the action star and the lone ranger are one and the same. What makes Last Seen feel a bit closer to something like Taken is that, unlike the leads in many Westerns, Ian Hunt has hung up his spurs, or in this case, his service weapon.

As a dispatcher, Ian has chosen a modest, civilian life, though he hasn’t completely let go of the police force. The same way Liam Neeson’s Bryan Mills doesn’t forget his CIA training, Ian has not completely forgotten his own training. In a more down-to-earth version of modern-day Texas, however, Ian may run into a country more like that of No Country for Old Men, and that doesn’t bode well for anyone.

The Cast Of Last Seen Is A Stacked Ensemble

The cast of Last Seen is another good reason to catch the series (via TVGuide). So far, a large ensemble has been revealed, including Patrick Brammall as Ian Ridley. Other notable cast members include Maxine Peake as Jenna Reid, Brendan Cowell as Henry Reid, Daniel Henshall as Donald Reid, Zahra Newman as Isabel Pena, Felix Cameron as Tommy Brenton, Bert La Bonté as Bill McCracken, Fletcher Humphrys as Peter Mulligan, and Carolyn Bock as Lydia. To name a few.

Last Seen is the kind of small, tight story that Apple TV has been nailing in recent years. With the cast, a great source in the novel, and the support of the streamer, it’s an original series to look out for this fall.
