Apple TV is embracing a new genre.

There’s been a lot of discussion in television about how Apple TV is the new HBO because of its willingness to bet on original ideas and starry adaptations that helped to define HBO for decades. This is boosted by successes in the scripted realm, including Widow’s Bay, Pluribus, and Severance, among several others.

It’s led to a lot of love for Apple TV at awards ceremonies such as the Emmys and Golden Globes. But the platform has ventured beyond the scripted and docuseries space here and there. The first show produced by Apple was Planet of the Apps, released in June 2017 via Apple Music and predating the streaming service. It also released the genre-specific competition programs KPopped and My Kind of Country.

Now, more than six years after it first launched, Deadline reports that Apple TV is moving forward with its first-ever dating show. It’ll be called The Last Person on Earth, introducing viewers to a team of matchmakers whose job it is to bring together couples that appear to be complete opposites.

The couples will go on an adventure “in one of the world’s most romantic and remote destinations,” according to the description. It’s described as a social experiment that unfolds over the course of eight episodes, exploring themes of isolation, polarization, and the question of whether opposites really do attract. A specific premiere date has not been announced.

Acclaimed psychotherapist Esther Perel will work with the team of matchmakers in The Last Person on Earth. Perel is a New York Times bestselling author. She’s known for the Where Should We Begin? podcast, in which she shares recordings of her sessions with anonymous couples. Perel, who recently consulted on the well-reviewed Olivia Wilde-directed comedy The Invite, reacted to the news in a statement. It’s included below:

“Over the course of my career as a couples therapist, one truth has become undeniable: love may crave closeness, but desire is fueled by otherness. The Last Person on Earth is a bold exploration of relationships that challenges everything we assume about compatibility; inviting people to drop the checklist and embrace dating as an adventure into the unknown. When we choose to step outside the narrow boundaries of what feels familiar or safe, passionate love stories can flourish.”

The Last Person on Earth could be seen as an attempt to compete with Netflix’s dominance in the realm of dating shows and romance reality series. But for Apple TV, which has developed a reputation for itself as a prestige hub since arriving in November 2019, it is taking its biggest step into reality television yet on its own terms.

It is early. But the inclusion of Perel and the relatively lofty concept stays true to what Apple has shown with its scripted originals. It wants to work with stars, and it wants to give audiences a genre they enjoy but in a more heightened and specific package. Time will tell if that approach will favor The Last Person on Earth.
