One of Amazon’s most recent box office flops is coming back in a brand-new way this October. Amazon MGM Studios has found great success with films like Project Hail Mary, which grossed $685 million and received critical acclaim. But not every project becomes a theatrical hit. For example, Mindy Kaling’s Late Night and Dwayne Johnson’s Red One underperformed in theaters.

Sometimes, box office bombs have a miraculous turnaround once they’re released on streaming platforms. That’s what happened with Masters of the Universe, this year’s adaptation of the famous Mattel property.

The movie had to settle for second place on opening weekend in June, behind Scary Movie, and only earned $113.7 million by the time it left theaters against a reported $170 million budget. Reviews were mixed-to-positive, with a 68% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Once it arrived on Prime Video, that’s when Masters of the Universe started to take off, as it garnered 1.17 billion views in its first week on the streaming platform.

Now, after its theatrical disappointment and streaming success, the film will be released on 4K Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD on October 20. Special features include a behind-the-scenes promotional gallery and a featurette called “Masters of Light: Skies of Eternia Drone Spectacle.”

With a cast consisting of Nicholas Galitzine, Jared Leto, Camila Mendes, Alison Brie, James Purefoy, Morena Baccarin, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Kristen Wiig and Idris Elba, Masters of the Universe tells the story of Prince Adam as he heads back home to Eternia, where he must step up and defend his planet from villain Skeletor.

Kubo and the Two Strings and Bumblebee filmmaker Travis Knight directed Masters of the Universe from a script by Chris Butler, Aaron Nee, Adam Nee and David Callaham. Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Robbie Brenner and DeVon Franklin were producers on the film.

This was Mattel’s third attempt at a feature-length adaptation of the iconic character after the animated movie The Secret of the Sword in 1985 and the live-action Masters of the Universe two years later.

Since then, He-Man has been seen mostly on the small screen in several animated TV shows, including, most recently, Netflix’s He-Man and the Masters of the Universe that aired for three seasons.

Not enough moviegoers were willing to pay to see the new remake in theaters, even though they enjoyed it more than critics did (85% on Rotten Tomatoes compared to the critics’ 86%), but the sword-and-sorcery film has since found a whole new audience thanks to streaming, and its upcoming physical release has the potential to gain new fans as well.

Masters of the Universe will be released on 4K Blu-ray on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.
