Ahsoka’s return may come with a major continuity error for the Star Wars franchise.

After a very long hiatus, Ahsoka Season 2 finally has a confirmed release date. With the first season having debuted on Disney+ in August 2023, Lucasfilm has revealed that the series will return on January 20, 2027. And recent promotional material has also begun revealing much more about what audiences can expect from the next chapter.

The first teaser offered a decent amount of information about Ahsoka season 2’s storyline. Hayden Christensen will once again appear as Anakin Skywalker, seemingly training a younger version of the titular character (Ariana Greenblatt), as well as interacting with adult Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson). Meanwhile, Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi) has reunited with Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and is now fighting alongside the New Republic.

Additional concept art displayed for Ahsoka Season 2 has provided an even bigger look at the scale of that conflict. The artwork depicts action-packed battles that promise an exciting new season with higher stakes. With Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) seeking to push the New Republic toward war, the second chapter appears poised to move beyond the relatively contained conflict of the first installment.

Although this is a refreshing change of pace, it also creates an interesting question about the wider Star Wars universe. Ahsoka takes place during the New Republic era, years before the events of the sequel trilogy, meaning any major war involving Thrawn has to fit within an already established period of the franchise’s history (if they want to stay true to canon). The more destructive the conflict becomes, the more the series may need to explain how such a significant crisis fits alongside what audiences already know about the New Republic and the events that eventually led to The Force Awakens.

For now, the precise scale and outcome of Thrawn’s campaign remain unknown. However, the combination of the official synopsis, teaser, and concept art strongly suggests that Ahsoka is preparing to tell a much larger story that could potentially upset avid Star Wars fans, meaning that Disney+ will need to address some continuity errors about the Return of the Jedi timeline.
