A Fresh Take on Utility

Our trip to Switzerland had me thinking about utility dressing in a much more literal way. The forecast bounced around all day, we spent most of our time outdoors, and there were long hikes in between. That meant sneakers that could stand up to a full afternoon on my feet, sweaters I could tie around my waist once the sun came out, and a light jacket for the morning mist that didn’t feel like too much by lunch.

Of course, I didn’t want to sacrifice form for function. I gravitated towards pieces that still felt like me: a pretty patchwork jacket with character, hiking shoes with a wink of color, worn with a cable-knit sweater and relaxed pants. It’s the kind of mix I’m carrying into fall, when texture starts to matter more and layers come back into everything.
