A 10/10 2006 Adventure Game Is Completely Free To Keep On Steam

As the one-stop-shop for all things PC gaming, Steam is a treasure trove of incredible games, but what many users seem to forget, is that it is also the home of some incredible freebies, if you just know where and when to look.

Whilst some freebies are offered for a limited time thanks to regular demo fests, others are permanently available at no cost, and that includes this hidden gem that launched just days ago and is already sitting at a ‘Positive’ user rating.

First released back in 2006, Knytt was an indie platformer game which was originally made available as freeware for Microsoft Windows. The game followed protagonist Knytt after he is abducted by aliens and left to explore a strange planet.

Now, Knytt is back courtesy of Knytt Classic, a PC game that can now be downloaded for free on Steam. Developed by Bit Kid, it serves as a 20th celebration of the original game, now rebuilt for modern technology.

Explore a maze-like planet as the Knytt, a peaceful being abducted by aliens, find your missing ship parts, and get back home in this zen-like atmospheric platformer.

Released on 10 August, Knytt Classic has an intriguing story, and luckily, the official Steam synopsis dives into the history of the hidden gem: “The indie freeware classic returns! It’s been 20 years since visionary Swedish indie developer Nifflas (Rhythm Doggo, Ynglet) released Knytt, the first title in the atmospheric platforming series. Made with the help of a passionate group of internet forum collaborators, the game was released for free on the web in 2006, and later followed up by Knytt Stories (2007) and Knytt Underground (2012)… To help celebrate the 20th anniversary, Bit Kid (Chasm, WOLFHOUND) is proud to present Knytt Classic, a free pixel-perfect port with full controller support, achievements, bonus modes, display effects, and much more!”

Now launching as a pixel-perfect port, Knytt Classic features over 1,500 screens to explore, including both the original game and three bonus modes: UltraTough, a brand-new challenging mode created by Bit Kid, as well as Knytt XH (Extra Hard) and Brutally Unfair Knytt’s remixed world.

On top of that, players can expect achievements and hidden bonuses which will be perfect for the completionists out there, as well as full gamepad support and remappable controls, optional in-game timer and fastest completion time tracking, and Windows, Mac, Linux & Steam Deck support.

Whether you enjoyed Knytt back in the day, or are just on the search for an exciting new platformer, look no further than Knytt Classic courtesy of its free download over on Steam.
