Almost all shows of the mystery thriller genre introduce some kind of narrative twists and turns to keep viewers hooked. However, as simple as it may sound on paper, timing a perfect twist is not an easy feat. A twist should also not stretch a viewer’s suspension of disbelief to a point where it becomes almost nonsensical.
One mind-boggling twist in an original Apple TV show seems to test all these rules by delivering an unforgettable twist close to the end of its first season’s run. This genre-bending twist is so bizarre that it becomes hard to conclude its brilliant or borderline silly.
Apple TV’s Sugar Suddenly Switches Genres In Its Final Moments
Since Colin Farrell plays its leading detective character, Apple TV’s Sugar initially comes off as a replacement for True Detective season 2. Nothing about it feels groundbreaking, but Farrell’s performance and the show’s neo-noir aesthetic are enough to keep one invested. However, the more the show progresses, the harder it becomes to notice how Farrell’s character does not seem normal.
He is portrayed as a brilliant polyglot and even displays near-superhuman reflexes during action sequences. Even his obsession with classic Westerns and detective films starts to look odd.
Just when a viewer starts getting suspicious about Farrell’s character, the Apple TV show delivers one of the most shocking genre switches in TV history. From coming off as a typical detective thriller, Sugar suddenly morphs into a sci-fi series by revealing that Farrell’s character is an alien. This twist completely changes how you perceive the character and his crime-solving endeavors.
It also switches the stakes of the show and gives it a more expansive sense of mystery. In a day and age when most shows and movies play it safe by adopting tried and tested storytelling devices, Sugar defies the norm by bringing something completely novel to the table.
While it is arguable whether its twist works in its favor, it is hard not to appreciate it for its ambition. The show takes a major risk with its massive twist because, even without it, it works quite well as a decent crime thriller.
However, when the genre shift is finally revealed, Sugar manages to establish that it is nothing like the regular fare of detective shows. Although it is yet to etch a solid identity for itself, its ability to completely flip expectations with its genre-bending narratives sets it on the right path to be more successful in the future.
Sugar’s Sci-Fi Twist Is Either Genius Or Outright Silly
After watching the Apple TV show’s sci-fi twist almost a handful of times, I am still not sure whether I’m impressed by it or actually turned off. I cannot make up my mind about whether I find it genius or outright silly, but that is exactly what makes it so fascinating. Only a few shows dare to swing completely for the bold, especially after spending several episodes convincing viewers that they are watching a grounded noir detective story.
Since Sugar has already been renewed for season 2 and is all set to return soon in 2026, viewers still have time to decide what they think about its genre shift.
It is undeniable, though, that the twist towards Sugar season 1’s ending has made its next installment even more exciting. Knowing that the show is about an alien being and not a human before walking into season 2 is almost like watching an entirely different series unfold.
If it were a regular detective series, one would at least have a fair idea about what is to be expected from the Apple TV show’s season 2. After the sudden shift in its genre, however, I, like most viewers, have no clue what the future holds for the series. This may or may not work in the show’s favor, but it at least promises to keep things exciting.
