While Season 3 kicks off the highly awaited Culling Game Arc, Jujutsu Kaisen‘s sequel, Modulo, has also entered the climax of its story, and it’s only getting better from here on out. Amidst the ongoing main duel between Dabura and Yuka and the emotionally charged fight between Tsurugi and Maru, Modulo recently surprised fans with the return of Yuji Itadori, the series’ original protagonist.
Yuji’s comeback is already more than living up to the anticipation surrounding it for the last couple of months, especially with him having evolved into Modulo’s equivalent of Gojo Satoru. That said, beyond getting a glimpse of Yuji’s newly honed abilities, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo also just dropped an unexpected revelation about Yuji, and it changes him forever.
Jujutsu Kaisen’s Sequel Confirms Yuji Is No Longer Human
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo’s premise is centered largely around the Simurians, an alien race seeking refuge on Earth, and the diplomatic tensions that arise with human sorcerers in this process. In exploring the Simurians’ tragic backstory, the sequel revealed the existence of kalyans.
These mysterious beasts were revealed to hold great importance among the Rumelians in particular, and the killing of these kalyans was closely tied to their exile from their original home planet.
Subsequently, tensions between humans and the Simurians recently escalated when the Japanese sorcerers set out to clear some of the cursed spirits infesting Makyo Shinjuku, only for the Simurians to mistake cursed spirits for kalyans.
It’s still unclear whether kalyans and cursed spirits are truly one and the same, as the latter are specifically known to consist of negative cursed energy. However, this does not change the surprising recent revelation made in chapter #20 of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo.
The latest chapter sees Osuki, one of the Rumelians point out that Yuji has the aura of a kalyan, as he approaches him to attack. This seems to hint that Yuji is presently more like a cursed spirit rather than human in the sequel, and it actually makes a lot of sense for many reasons.
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo’s New Twist Explains Several Yuji Mysteries
As unexpected as this new revelation about Yuji may seem at first glance, it may have been in the making as long as Chapter #220 of the original series. In the chapter, Yuji revealed he was more like a cursed object steeped in Sukuna’s cursed energy.
This observation came straight from Shoko, and it is likely the change came about from Yuji being Sukuna’s vessel for so long. Leading up to the final battle against Sukuna, Yuji would also go on to consume the other Cursed Womb Death Paintings in order to get stronger, which was also subtly alluded to in Chapter #220 of Jujutsu Kaisen.
Jujutsu Kaisen’s final battle would also later reveal that Yuji had been created by Kenjaku with the specific purpose of being a vessel for Sukuna, which explains Yuji’s innate, unnatural physical capabilities from the very start, even before he first came across Sukuna’s finger.
It is very likely all these factors contributed to Yuji’s evolution into a cursed spirit-like life-form over the last six decades. This shift is also oddly also reminiscent of Master Tengen’s evolution into a cursed spirit after failing to fuse with the Star Plasma Vessel.
All that said, Modulo’s new twist finally explains why Yuji is still alive and has barely aged even as his peers have grown old and passed. Now that Yuji has returned, it’s clear the sequel has more plans for him. However, Yuji may be in line for a tragic end to his story, whether that is to die as the strongest just like Gojo Satoru, or live for all eternity all alone, unable to fulfill his grandfather’s final wish.
