Conan O’Brien may be done with late-night television, but Paul Rudd’s long-running prank continues to haunt him.
Rudd made an appearance on a recent episode of Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend. And, he took the opportunity to revive the gag joke he has been pulling on the former late-night host for more than two decades. Since 2004, the actor has repeatedly appeared on his show or podcast under the pretense of promoting a new project, only to roll the same bizarre clip from the 1988 science fiction film Mac and Me instead.
This time, Rudd was on O’Brien’s podcast to promote his new comedy movie, Anaconda, which also starred Jack Black. The movie is about two amateur filmmakers who set out to remake the original Anaconda with their friends. Rudd told the host that he brought a clip from the film to show him. However, instead of playing a clip of the new meta reboot, he showed him one from Mac and Me, which made O’Brien laugh immediately.
While the host acknowledged that the ongoing gag is still funny, it has become a little predictable after over two decades. He explained that the setup itself now gives away Rudd’s plans. He added that the moment the actor mentions bringing a clip, it would likely just be a video of Mac and Me. Rudd agreed and admitted that he no longer makes a real effort to disguise his intentions. “I’ll be honest, I put very little thought into how I was going to do it this time.“
However, while the joke had become pretty obvious, Rudd coyly revealed that he had plans to put a twist on the prank. He said that he didn’t want to reveal it on air because that would defeat the purpose, but he would catch O’Brien off guard if he ever decided to take the Mac and Me stunt in a different direction. He also teased that it would be the “greatest” prank of all time.
I did think of a scenario where we could do this, and I don’t want to reveal it here. I did think of a scenario which would be momentous, and I’m hoping we get to do it someday. There is a way to do this that would be the greatest, but I will figure that out.
Rudd previously revealed that the whole reason why he came up with the idea was that he never felt comfortable promoting his own films. So, the prank was a way to replace offering a preview of his upcoming movies while messing with O’Brien at the same time.
The 20-year gag originated in 2004 when he was on the hit TV show Friends and promoting the series finale. During Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Rudd lied and said he brought a clip from the very last episode of the iconic show and hyped up the audience, only to disappoint them by showing them a scene from the science fiction cult classic.
Anaconda is playing in theaters now.
