With Christmas upon us, I’m sure there are plenty of gamers out there who have just (or about to) tear into a brand-new PlayStation 5 console. Whether you’re a newcomer to the PS5 or not, however, there’s one trick you’re going to want to take advantage of.
I’m sure we’ve all experienced the pain of finding a great game on the PlayStation Store during a holiday sale, only to discover it’s going to take hours to download, eating into your precious time off when you could be gaming. Fortunately, there’s a fix for that.
PlayStation 5 Gamers Can Double Their Download Speeds
You only need to change one setting
By changing one tiny setting on your PlayStation 5, you can double your download speeds. Perfect if you’ve just got yourself a new PlayStation 5 or plan to download a ton of 2025 games like Silent Hill f and Ghost Of Yotei.
It’s a super easy process, to the extent that even I was able to do it on my PlayStation 5, and I’m about as dumb as it gets. Some of you reading this will probably roll your eyes because you already knew exactly what to do, but I’m here to help the newbies.
Here’s the deal: Typically, your PlayStation 5 Wi-Fi network is set to 2.4GHz. If you change it to 5GHz, you should get a more stable connection when playing online and see a huge boost to your download speeds. There are some caveats, but I’ll get to those in a second.
Here’s what you need to do:
- Go to Settings, then hit Network.
- Select Set Up Internet Connection.
- Choose your network and press the Options button on the controller, then you’ll want to choose Forget Network.
- Press Triangle to scan networks, choose your network, and sign in.
- Once you’re connected, select Network and press Options again, then choose Wi-Fi Frequency and set it to 5GHz.
- Go back one screen to select Connection Status, then View Connection Status to double check your PS5 is now using 5GHz. If you want to triple check, hit Test Internet Connection.
That’s pretty much it. It’s a few small steps, but could be worth it for you. Could being the operative word.
Changing This Setting Isn’t For Everyone
Consider carefully before you do anything
While it’s true that 5GHz offers a much stronger connection, it also has a shorter range than 2.5GHz. It’s also more easily blocked by solid objects like tables, walls, and desks. Really think about where your router is in relation to your PS5 before you change any settings. If your console is on a different floor to your router, it might not be worth it.
I should also point out that an Ethernet cable is obviously the objectively the best option for faster PlayStation 5 speeds. But if for any reason this just isn’t doable for you, switching for 5GHz could be a quick fix.
