In Fallout season 2, episode 2, we finally get a glimpse at what life was like in Shady Sands moments before the nuclear bomb wiped the city off the face of the Earth. But it’s a bittersweet reveal after seeing how far this community had come in trying to establish a civil lifestyle in the wastelands.

Despite progress towards rebuilding a functional and equal society, Hank MacLean’s anger at his wife after having left him proved too much, and Hank sent a warhead device into the center of Shady Sands, ready to level the township and wipe out everyone who had made a life there.

Seeing Maximus’ Parents Makes The Shady Sands Bombing Even Sadder

Among the tragic residents of Shady Sands, we meet Maximus’ parents for the first time. They appear to be respected and important individuals in the community, with his father building and inventing tools that contribute to their reborn society. And fortunately, it was Maximus’ parents who recognized the danger from the strange cart first.

Maximus’ father tried to cut the wire on the bomb and stop the imminent detonation, but a fail-safe caused the timer to quicken, and Shady Sands was no more. But in the moments before this disaster, we see the love, kindness, and selflessness of Maximus’ parents as they do all they can to save him, and wish him a better future.

Fallout’s Shady Sands Flashback Proves How Evil Hank Really Is

Conversely, we also get to take a peek behind the curtain to see how a younger Hank MacLean behaved at that moment. As the Overseer of Vault 33, and a part of the management team in Vault-Tec tasked with preserving a future only for the people who paid for that privilege, we see Hank input orders and watch the updates on his Pip-Boy.

Meanwhile, a few feet behind him, his daughter, Lucy, is calling her father over to read a story. And at this moment, as Hank lays down his Pip-Boy and walks to read with his daughter, the weight of those choices finally lands. Hank has not only murdered his wife, Lucy’s mother, but he has also eradicated a thriving community. Then he dares to turn to his daughter and act like all is right with the world.

It’s a devastating revelation that makes the moment even darker, while showcasing the depths of Hank’s terrible nature. But whether Fallout season 2 will allow Lucy to witness his evil nature to this degree for herself is uncertain.
