CBS struck gold with their uproarious sitcom, The Neighborhood, and now the comedy will return for its eighth and final season. Created for the small screen by Jim Reynolds (and debuting in 2018), the series follows the white Midwestern Johnson family as they move into a predominantly Black neighborhood in Los Angeles. Though the overly-friendly family ruffles a few feathers, they strike up an unlikely friendship with their neighbors, the Butlers. The sitcom touches on many of the familiar culture-clash talking points that have been broached in previous shows, but does so with a modern and open-hearted sense of humor.
The best sitcoms of all time typically stray away from the most topical storylines, but The Neighborhood has never been afraid to approach hot-button issues without alienating the audience. Viewers have watched the Johnson and Butler families grow and change together over the show’s nearly decade-long run, and that sort of continuity has made it one of CBS’ crown jewels. With a spinoff, Crutch, also in the offing, The Neighborhood is beginning to wind down its impressive tenure on the air. Though CBS has renewed the show for season 8, it will also be the last.
The Neighborhood Season 8 Latest News
CBS Renews & Cancels The Neighborhood
With the network in a state of flux, the latest news confirms that CBS has renewed and canceled The Neighborhood. In a dual move, the network has opted to bring the Butler and Johnson families back for an eighth season, while also announcing that season 8 will be the last hurrah for The Neighborhood. This announcement comes amid a slew of other cancelations at CBS, and the network has already axed FBI: International, FBI: Most Wanted, and perhaps most controversial of all, S.W.A.T. starring Shemar Moore.
Crutch is a forthcoming spinoff of The Neighborhood that stars Tracy Morgan and will be a Paramount+ exclusive.
The Neighborhood Season 8 Is Confirmed As The Last
Return To The Neighborhood One Last Time
Even though The Neighborhood has become one of the most popular sitcoms on TV today, it’s future was never set in stone at CBS. Eventually, the network opted to renew the show in March 2025, but it came with the caveat that The Neighborhood season 8 will be the final season for the original series. Throughout its near decade on the air thus far, The Neighborhood has been a consistent hit for CBS, but with a slew of cancelations, it’s clear that the network is in a state of flux.
The Neighborhood has been a fall staple since its premiere, and there’s no reason that the eighth and final outing won’t follow the same schedule.
Because the renewal order is still so fresh, there are few details about the upcoming final season of the series. However, with CBS looking to get The Neighborhood off its future schedule, the sitcom will certainly arrive for fall 2025. Like most network shows, The Neighborhood has been a fall staple since its premiere, and there’s no reason that the eighth and final outing won’t follow the same schedule.
The Neighborhood season 7 premiered on October 21, 2024.
The Neighborhood Season 8 Cast Details
The Johnsons & Butlers Will Return
Sitcoms rely on their casts to stay consistent in order to build continuity from season to season, and the bond between the Johnsons and Butlers is the true heart of The Neighborhood. As such, there isn’t going to be much change going into season 8, and Cedric the Entertainer will once again return to play the gruff but lovable Calvin Butler. Joining him will be his neighbor, Dave Johnson (played by Max Greenfield), who he doesn’t always see eye-to-eye with. Tichina Arnold will return as the much more understanding Tina, Calvin’s wife, while Beth Behrs will play Dave’s wife, Gemma.
The rest of the Johnson and Butler families are expected to return as well, including young Hank Greenspan as Grover Johnson, the precocious tween. Calvin and Tina’s children, Marty (the youngest, played by Marcel Spears) and Malcolm (the oldest, played by Sheaun McKinney) will also be back. Skye Townsend’s Courtney has become integral to the plot since she welcomed a baby with Marty in season 6.
The cast of The Neighborhood season 8 includes:
Actor | The Neighborhood Role

Tichina Arnold | Tina Butler
Beth Behrs | Gemma Johnson
Hank Greenspan | Grover Johnson

The Butler & Johnson Families Grow Together
Predicting exactly what happens in The Neighborhood season 8 is impossible, since the show follows a very familiar sitcom formula each year. Each episode is usually a standalone story that explores a conflict that is typically resolved by the end. However, there are a few things that will carry over into the future, including Marty and Courtney’s parenting journey, as well as the Johnsons grappling with Grover turning into a teen. As always, the culture clash between the families will be the heart of The Neighborhood and the hilarious and heartfelt sitcom isn’t expected to change much.
