Attack on Titan has become a benchmark for dark fantasy anime thanks to its grim world and sharp questioning of humanity’s difference between good and evil. For this reason, even long after its conclusion, fans continue to search for an anime with a similar aftertaste. Fortunately, Attack on Titan fans have a new title to look forward to in 2026.
While Chainsaw Man and Jujutsu Kaisen have become staples of the genre, they’re set in a modern era, lacking the allure of Attack on Titan’s cathartic story of humanity’s counterattack in a medieval world. However, Crunchyroll’s Sentenced to Be a Hero promises to be one of Winter 2026’s best anime and might even follow in the footsteps of Attack on Titan‘s success.
Sentenced To Be a Hero Is Shaping up To Be the Anime’s Next Great Dark Fantasy After Attack on Titan
Although there isn’t much hype surrounding its adaptation yet, since its premiere was originally scheduled for Fall 2025, Sentenced to Be a Hero: The Prison Records of Penal Hero Unit 9004 could be the dark horse anime that dominates 2026. The anime centers on Xylo Forbartz, a criminal in a post-apocalyptic world who has been condemned to the worst possible punishment.
Being a hero is not a symbol of honor and glory but rather a position reserved for those guilty of infamous acts. They are forced to fight on the front lines of the battlefield against the Demon Lord, who is able to spawn beasts called grotesques. Moreover, they have to obey orders even after death, as they can be revived endlessly.
Being filled with epic fantasy elements like magic, goddesses, demon lords, and criminals facing practically eternal punishment makes Sentenced to Be a Hero‘ story less grounded in reality than Attack on Titan and more like a mix of Suicide Squad with knights. Even so, its most striking similarity with Hajime Isayama’s masterpiece is how it subverts the concept of “heroism.”
Just like Attack on Titan developed a layered protagonist who committed questionable acts in order to save humanity, Sentence to Be a Hero features a morally ambiguous unit fighting hideous monsters to save the little remnant of humanity. Given that, in recent years, most fantasy anime have been generic isekai, Sentenced to Be a Hero offers something different for fans.
Sentenced To Be a Hero Raises Expectations With Its High Quality Animation
Produced by Studio KAI, Sentenced To Be a Hero boasts a stellar staff led by Hiroyuki Takashima, acclaimed for his work on Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation. Also, according to Crunchyroll, Sentenced to Be a Hero was delayed until winter 2026, the reason was to maximize the potential of the adaptation and improve the quality of the animation.
As a result, it seems the production team has more than paid fans’ dues for the wait because Sentence To Be a Hero trailers have teased an absolute visual spectacle with dynamic action scenes and high-quality animation. The anime will also premiere with a 60-minute extended special starting in January 2026 with a simulcast on Crunchyroll, which increases fans’ expectations.
Nevertheless, the anime presents itself as a deeply captivating story whose exquisite production and technical quality. This might give Sentenced to Be a Hero an unprecedented success that, while not rivaling the impact of Attack on Titan, could easily surpass any modern dark fantasy anime and become one of the best releases of recent years.
