Official Multi-Season Order, Shogun Director, Pre-Production Update

Amazon’s God of War adaptation gets an official multi-season order, adds a Shōgun director, and is now in pre-production. Prime Video’s series adaptation of the hit PlayStation video game was originally announced in 2022, but underwent a creative overhaul last fall with the addition of Ronald D. Moore as showrunner, writer and executive producer.

Now, according to Deadline, God of War has officially received a two-season order from Prime Video and brought on another major creative figure, director Frederick E.O. Toye, to helm the first two episodes. Additionally, pre-production is currently underway in Vancouver, and the casting process has begun, starting with the two lead roles of Kratos and Atreus.

Amazon’s God of War show was accelerated after Moore joined as the new showrunner and earlier this year, Prime Video quietly expanded the order to two seasons. For a series of this scale, that move is fairly typical when a platform is confident in the creative direction, since large world-building expenses – like production design, sets, costumes, and props – are more cost-effective when spread across multiple seasons.

During an appearance on The Sackhoff Show podcast earlier this year, Moore mentioned God of War‘s two-season order, which has now been confirmed by Prime Video:

Right now I’m working on the adaptation of this video game called God of War, a big title in the gaming world that Amazon has ordered two seasons of, and they have asked me to come in. I’m literally in the writers room and working on that.

On the other hand, Toye directed four episodes of FX’s acclaimed series Shōgun, winning an Emmy for the episode “Crimson Sky.” In recent years, he’s also become one of Prime Video’s most trusted directors, helming multiple episodes of Fallout, The Boys, The Terminal List, and Terminal List: Dark Wolf.

Toye also recently wrapped directing the opening episodes of Prime Video’s upcoming series, Bloodaxe. His additional episodic work spans a wide range of high-profile shows, including Lost, The Good Wife, Person of Interest, American Gods, The Walking Dead, See, Lost in Space, Westworld, Watchmen, and Snowpiercer.

Based on the massively popular PlayStation game, God of War follows the father and son, Kratos and Atreus, as they set out to scatter the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye, and along the way, Kratos attempts to guide Atreus toward becoming a better god, while Atreus strives to show his father how to be a better human.
