Injuries rule Maguire and Ugarte out as visitors fly to Spain

Harry Maguire and Manuel Ugarte have not joined Manchester United’s squad for their trip to Real Sociedad in the first leg of the Europa League round of 16.

Centre-back Maguire – who turned 32 on the day United travelled – and midfielder Ugarte missed training with injuries sustained in the FA Cup fifth round defeat on penalties at home to Fulham on Sunday.

Manager Ruben Amorim and defender Matthijs de Ligt will hold a press conference after arriving in Spain at around 6.15pm GMT on Wednesday.

Man United injuries

Ugarte missed the 1-0 defeat at Tottenham on February 16 through injury, while Maguire has featured in all of the club’s Premier League matches since returning from an issue on December 1.

United are without goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, so Dermot Mee and Elyh Harrison are the understudies to first-choice Andre Onana.

Defenders Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and Jonny Evans, midfielders Mason Mount and Kobbie Mainoo and attacker Amad Diallo remain out.

Man United squad vs Real Sociedad

Full-back Patrick Dorgu is eligible to play despite a domestic suspension. 18-year-old defender Ayden Heaven –  signed in the January transfer window from Arsenal – follows up his senior debut against the Cottagers by joining a European squad for the first time.

Man United squad: Andre Onana, Dermot Mee, Elyh Harrison; Harry Amass, Diogo Dalot, Matthijs de Ligt, Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu, Ayden Heaven, Victor Lindelof, Noussair Mazraoui, Leny Yoro; Casemiro, Toby Collyer, Christian Eriksen, Bruno Fernandes; Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Hojlund, Joshua Zirkzee.

Manchester United vs Sociedad

The Europa League is United’s only realistic opportunity to win a trophy this season following the end of their title defence in the FA Cup.

Sociedad, who traded away wins with United in the 2022/23 group stage of the competition, are ninth in Spain after losing 4-0 at Barcelona on Sunday.

La Real finished 13th in the league phase of this season’s Europa League before beating Midtjylland 7-3 in the knockout phase play-offs.
