WARNING! This article contains SPOILERS for Severance season 2, episode 7!After plenty of anticipation, Severance season 2, episode 7 finally clarifies what’s been happening with Gemma on the Testing Floor, debunking a big theory about her Outie. Toward the end of Severance season 1, it was confirmed that Lumon’s severed Wellness Director, Ms. Casey, was actually Gemma, Mark’s wife who died two years prior to the start of the series. While Mark identified Gemma’s body after a seemingly fatal car crash, Severance season 1 confirmed that she had secretly been at Lumon the entire time, though the reason for faking her death and donning the name Ms. Casey was unclear.
In Severance season 2, episode 7, “Chikhai Bardo,” the Apple TV+ series finally explains what Lumon has been doing with Gemma over the past two years since her “death.” Except for when she would do wellness sessions as Ms. Casey with Severance’s main characters on the severed floor, Gemma has been confined to the Testing Floor, where she’s tasked with entering different rooms, undergoing procedures, and experiencing various simulations. Though it’s now implied that she has a different Innie for each room, Gemma herself is still there, which disproves a common fan theory about her identity at Lumon.
Severance Season 2 Episode 7 Debunks The Theory That Gemma Really Is Dead
A Fan Theory Speculated That Gemma’s Outie Really Did Die In The Car Accident
After Ms. Casey’s Outie identity was confirmed, there were some subsequent fan theories speculating that Gemma herself was technically dead, so the only “living” part of her was her Innies. Some of these theories elaborated that Gemma truly did die in the car accident two years ago, with Lumon then taking her body, severing her brain, and simply resurrecting her Innie consciousness. If that were the case, then Lumon technically wouldn’t have been lying about Gemma being dead, as Ms. Casey’s consciousness would have been the only one alive inside her body.
It’s still unclear whether the dead body Mark identified was actually Gemma, or if it was really even human.
However, the journey through Gemma’s experiences in Severance season 2, episode 7 confirms that’s not the case. When she’s in her bedroom and walking through the halls on the Testing Floor, Gemma is still Gemma – she never died. Dr. Mauer refers to her as Gemma, and she also has memories of Mark, even asking when she’ll be able to see him. While some major points of confusion around what Lumon is doing with Gemma have now been clarified, there are still numerous questions to be answered about how Lumon convinced her to join their experiments.
Did Gemma Agree To Become A Lumon Test Subject Before Faking Her Death?
Gemma Has Been Manipulated Into Staying On The Testing Floor (& Likely Doesn’t Know How Long She’s Been There)
Now, the question remains of whether Gemma knew what she was getting into and opted to undergo Lumon’s severance procedure. Severance season 2, episode 7 drops some subtle clues about Lumon trying to recruit Gemma for their experiments prior to her “death,” including Dr. Mauer being spotted at the fertility clinic she goes to and Lumon’s flash cards set being sent to her in the mail. However, the episode doesn’t directly show Lumon contacting her before the crash or Gemma being offered anything by the company.

What Is Cold Harbor In Severance Season 2? Why Mark’s New Project Is So Important
Mark’s new project in Severance season 2 is the mysterious Cold Harbor file, which is linked to Gemma & has a major role in Lumon’s bigger plans.
It’s implied that Lumon recruited Gemma with the promise of giving her a baby. Mark and Gemma were having pregnancy struggles for some time, and this grief was clearly consuming her before her “death.” Lumon might have reached out to her as a candidate for a new medical experiment, conducting tests that would ultimately lead to a successful pregnancy. However, it’s unlikely she would agree to fake her death for this, suggesting Lumon brought Gemma on-site, staged a crash, fabricated her death, and manipulated her into staying for years due to the unclear passage of time on Severance’s Testing Floor.
