Netflix’s Fifty Shades Of Grey Replacement Instantly Surges On The U.S. Streaming Charts

Netflix’s Fifty Shades of Grey replacement movie surges on the U.S. streaming chart immediately after release. Originally started as a fan fiction of Twilight titled Master of the Universe, the E.L. James’ novel was developed into an original novel with characters’ names changed and setting added to avoid copyright issues.

Later published as Fifty Shades of Grey, the erotic romance took off and became a global sensation before being opted for movies. A total of three movies (based on each book), the first Fifty Shades movie starring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan made just under $570 million worldwide and became the 11th highest-grossing movie in 2015.

Arrived on Netflix’s streaming service on August 21, the German erotic thriller Fall For Me stars Svenja Jung as Lilli, who sparked an instant connection with nightclub manager Tom (Theo Trebs) while visiting her sister Valeria (Tijan Marei) engaged to a Frenchman. Directed by Sherry Hormann, the movie features an original screenplay from Stefanie Sycholt.

With a blend of danger and seduction, Fall For Me centers around Lilli’s erotic connection with Tom, who hides a much darker secret, which he has no intention of telling her.

In just two days of its release, the erotic thriller has climbed up Netflix’s streaming chart as the No.2 most popular movie today, just behind KPop Demon Hunters. Currently at No.3 is The Truth About Jussie Smollett?, followed by BROKE and Abandoned Man. It’s worth noting that except for the fantasy movie, which has stayed on the Top 10 charts for nine weeks, the rest are all recently added.

What This Means For The Geman Erotic Thriller Fall For Me

Erotic thrillers are a niche genre, but from Fifty Shades of Grey to Nicole Kidman’s Babygirl, the genre has had a few films with commercial success. Fall For Me‘s streaming success suggests demand and interest in the genre. However, the movie is currently on track to become another poorly reviewed Netflix movie.

The Rotten Tomatoes score for Fall For Me is not yet available, but the four reviews it has already received were all criticism. Interestingly, the negative reception is not uncommon for the genre. Despite becoming a classic, Fifty Shades of Grey also received divisive reviews, with an RT score of 25%. Babygirl had a certified fresh critical score, but the film also received a rotten audience score.
