Pokemon’s Newest Anime Is Here, And It Is the Perfect Blast to the Past: Watch

The world celebrated Pokémon Day 2025 on February 27 with a flurry of exciting announcements and events. But for anime fans, the highlight was a new animated short premiering on the official Pokémon YouTube channel. This nearly 14-minute film boasts stunning animation from CoMix Wave Films, the studio behind Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name and Suzume.

Titled Dragonite and the Mailman (Kamiryu to Yubinya-san), the short takes fans on a high-flying adventure referencing the first Pokémon movie from 1998. It follows a young girl, Hana, who admires the postal worker Dragonite and discovers a mysterious letter without an address. Determined to find its sender, she embarks on an adventure, enlisting help from wild and domestic Pokémon. Longtime fans will recall Dragonite also delivering a message to Ash and Pikachu in Pokémon: The First Movie, connecting two eras of Pokémon history.

A Nostalgic Adventure: Dragonite and the Mailman Debuts

A Journey Through Pokémon History

Directed by Taku Kimura (Star Wars: Visions), the short highlights Pokémon working alongside humans and those thriving in the wild. Despite the challenge of animating so many creatures, Kimura embraced it, saying, “I didn’t shy away from that difficulty and drew them well.” In celebration of Pokémon’s 29th anniversary, he and the team incorporated Pokémon from various generations, creating a nostalgic journey that “gradually goes back through the series, starting from the Paldea region.”

With talents like Maho Aoki (Character Design/Animation Director) and Kentaro Nana (Script), Dragonite and the Mailman balances structured postal work with untamed wilderness. The animation and storytelling are filled with subtle references, making it a rewarding watch for longtime fans. Director Kimura encourages multiple viewings, as the short contains many hidden details celebrating nearly three decades of Pokémon adventures.
