Liverpool have received a £15 million windfall from selling Tyler Morton to French club Lyon, with the defensive midfielder set to play an important role in the Ligue 1 side’s team next campaign. Morton only appeared twice for Liverpool in the Premier League and had grown frustrated with a lack of opportunities at Anfield.

Morton previously has had loan spells at Blackburn Rovers and Hull City, but what really caught the eye for Lyon was Morton’s performances in this summer’s European under-21 championship in which England won the title.

Lyon offered Morton a five-year contract, signaling their belief in his long-term potential. From Liverpool’s perspective, offloading Morton was an opportunity to free up resources amid a busy transfer window and a loaded midfield, while still retaining a future financial upside via the sell-on clause.

Morton presented an ideal blend of youth, pedigree, and unfinished business at a top level. Morton offers versatility as a defensive midfielder, strong game intelligence, and a clean slate to develop in Ligue 1 and perhaps in European competition and his sale goes some way to helping balance the books at Liverpool.
