ENG vs IND: Michael Atherton picks India’s bowling combination for the Manchester Test against England

The fourth Test between England and India at Old Trafford, Manchester, is nothing short of a do-or-die encounter for the visitors. Trailing 1-2 in the five-match Test series, India must secure a victory to keep the series alive heading into the final game. With momentum swinging England’s way after their thrilling win at Lord’s, the pressure is on Shubman Gill and his team to regroup and deliver a strong performance under challenging conditions in Manchester.

Michael Atherton names India’s bowling attack for the fourth Test

Former England captain Michael Atherton has weighed in on India’s bowling options for the Manchester Test, offering a bold and tactical suggestion. Speaking on the Sky Sports podcast, Atherton pointed to Old Trafford’s surface characteristics and weather uncertainties while analyzing India’s bowling mix.

“In the middle, where the televised pitches are, I said just flat, flat, flat. You know wrist spin goes well at Old Trafford in those circumstances,” said Atherton.

Atherton suggested of playing three spinners alongside two seamers, especially on pitches that tend to flatten out as the game progresses.

“So I was wondering whether they could go like Bumrah and Siraj and then play their three spinners—Washington Sundar, Jadeja, and Kuldeep. But you don’t know about the forecast in Manchester, that’s the other thing. If it’s going to be cooler and more showery, then the fast bowlers come into it, but I think that’s a definite option India should think about,” added Atherton.

India under pressure but backed to bounce back

Despite the uphill task, fans and pundits alike believe India have the depth and determination to turn the tables. With Jasprit Bumrah‘s brilliance, Mohammed Siraj‘s aggression, and the spin trio offering variety and control, the potential bowling unit has the ingredients to trouble England’s batting lineup. Much will depend on how India assess the pitch and weather conditions heading into the game, but Atherton’s insight adds an interesting twist to the team selection debate.
