21 Years After Buffy The Vampire Slayer Spinoff’s Most Controversial Death, OG Star Increases Hope For Reboot Return

One original Buffy the Vampire Slayer star wants to return for the revival series. In 2024, it was announced that Buffy the Vampire Slayer received a pilot order from Hulu for a sequel show. Sarah Michelle Gellar will reprise her role as Buffy Summers alongside a new Slayer played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong. Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao will direct the pilot, with Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman as writers and showrunners.

In an interview with IGN, Cordelia Chase actor Charisma Carpenter shares her hopes that her character will return. Carpenter praises the creative team and her excitement about the reboot as a whole. She describes Cordelia’s death as “unjust” and believes that it would be “poetic” for her to return. While she does not know exactly how her character could return, she has faith in the show’s narrative.

I am so excited for fans, and I know it will be fantastic because of who’s involved. To see this actually happen for the fans makes me thrilled. I am so hopeful to be included, for Cordelia to be a part of this new iteration.

I don’t know really what to make of it. I’m sure there are caveats — Cordelia died on Angel not on Buffy. I don’t know what that means for Cordelia specifically, but I’m hopeful that it includes Cordelia, obviously, it would be a dream to be included, and it would just be so poetic for that to occur, and for it to occur with this group.

These writers are wildly creative, I’m sure they could figure it out if they wanted to, if it was a fan thing, where if there was a thirst or craving or need for Cordelia to be there, I’m sure with one hell of a creative team they have leading the writers room, it would be possible.

Listen, you’re not gonna get an argument out of me. Because the way it went down for her was just — without using inflammatory language — just was not… she was built up so big, she’d grown so much, she’d had this remarkable journey, and for her to go out the way that she did just felt so unjust.

What This Means For The Buffy The Vampire Slayer Reboot

Cordelia’s Return Would Be A Welcome Addition

Carpenter starred on Buffy the Vampire Slayer for three seasons before joining the spinoff Angel in 1999. Cordelia’s character had a significant amount of growth, going from a popular high-school bully to a selfless character driven by helping the helpless. After inheriting visions from The Powers That Be from Doyle, her character was forever changed.

Cordelia was written out of the series at the end of Angel season 4. Her real-life pregnancy was included in a controversial storyline where she was taken over by a demon that gave birth to itself after getting pregnant by Angel’s teenage son, Connor. She returned for the 100th episode in season 5, where she died at the end of the episode.

With the announcement of the return of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, we rank all the seasons of the original show, and its beloved spinoff, Angel.

Carpenter agreed to return to Angel on the condition her character would not be killed off; which is, of course, what ended up happening. Carpenter has spoken out against Angel co-creator Joss Whedon and the alleged filming conditions in recent years.

Our Take On Cordelia Potentially Returning

Her Death Is One Of The Most Painful Of Both Shows

Cordelia has returned to the world of Buffy and Angel in expanded material in the years since the show ended. In the Angel: After The Fall comics, which were plotted by Whedon and Brian Lynch, Cordelia returns to Angel after he receives a fatal stab wound working for The Powers That Be. Carpenter also recently reprised her role in the audio drama Slayers: A Buffyverse Story, where Cordelia was a Slayer from an alternate universe.

Gellar has stated she wants dead Buffy the Vampire Slayer characters to return in the new series. Cordelia is one of the biggest names that viewers would positively respond to if she could come back. Carpenter arguably gives one of the best performances across Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel during her final scene, but hopefully, she can return in the reboot.
