Carol Danvers starts anew in Marvel’s new Captain Marvel series, releasing May 2027. Due to her immensely powerful nature, Carol Danvers often needs to step aside in order to allow all other Marvel heroes to shine in every continuity. In the MCU, Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel is currently missing in action following the events of The Marvels. After the chaotic spatial anomalies and body-swapping crisis she resolved alongside Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau, Carol has taken a quiet sabbatical from active frontline duty, and she isn’t confirmed to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, just like she stayed absent during Thanos’ attack in Avengers: Infinity War.
Concurrently in Marvel Comics, Carol Danvers is facing the catastrophic events of Avengers: Armageddon. Captain Marvel’s controversial decision to disband the Avengers under the assumption that the world no longer required an organized team backfired, and Carol’s decision to leave Earth in search for extraterrestrial help during the Infernal Hulk’s global takeover has yet to bear fruit. Still, Carol Danvers retains her status as one of the Earth’s most important superhero leaders, capable of guiding the Avengers against their most dangerous enemies.
Next year, Captain Marvel will star in her own series, which will continues to connect to the wider Marvel Universe’s overarching story.
Marvel Confirms New Captain Marvel Series For 2027
Captain Marvel #1; Written By G. Willow Wilson; Art By Rachael Stott
Confirmed at New York Comic-Con 2026, the upcoming Captain Marvel comic miniseries will follow Carol Danvers after she survives the Marvel Universe’s latest crossover crises. Marvel’s new Captain Marvel ongoing comic is written by Kamala Khan co-creator and A-Force writer G. Willow Wilson, and illustrated by Wiccan: Witches’ Road artist Rachael Stott. The first issue of Carol Danvers’ new adventure will be available for purchase in May 2027.
The first official artwork for G. Willow Wilson and Rachael Stott’s Captain Marvel features a relaxed Carol Danvers carrying her jacket over her shoulder, wearing sunglasses and posing for a photo, with the caption “back to work.” But even though this promotional piece suggests a laid-back new beginning for Carol, Captain Marvel will face new threats that will challenge her power and morals. During the announcement, Marvel teased a foe that has been gearing up to attack the Marvel Universe for a long time, and it’s up to Captain Marvel to stop it.
Marvel’s New Captain Marvel Series Builds On Strong Foundations
Carol Danvers’ Next Story Is A True Fresh Beginning Without The Need For A Proper Reboot
The psychological and physical toll of Carol Danvers’ recent exploits sets up an introspective era of Captain Marvel comics. In the pages of Paul Jenkins and Lucas Werneck’s Captain Marvel: Dark Past, an aggressive attack on New York by the mysterious group DNVR forced Carol to unearth long-forgotten memories from her early days as Ms Marvel, pushed to her absolute limits against the villainous Desecrator. The cataclysmic events of Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto’s Avengers then led to Carol losing her faith in her role as Earth’s most powerful protector, especially after the arrival of David Colton a.k.a. Miracleman.
Considering where she finds herself now, G. Willow Wilson and Rachael Stott’s Captain Marvel series will likely capitalize on a much more grounded Carol Danvers. Wilson has teased a return to street-level characters from Carol’s extended history in arcs that distance her from her traditionally distant alien warfare. As Carol pushes past her comfort zone to rebuild her life on Earth, her new adventures will likely collide with a villain who will turn her journey of self-reinvention into a brutal battle for survival.
