Jos Buttler ruled out, Jofra Archer rested as England name squad for Pakistan, Sri Lanka tri-series

England have announced their squad for the upcoming ODI tri-series against Pakistan and Sri Lanka, with Harry Brook set to captain the side in Asia. The series begins on October 18, with England scheduled to face both hosts Pakistan and Sri Lanka twice before the final at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on October 31.

The selection comes after England enjoyed a successful white-ball series against Sri Lanka last month, winning the T20I series 3-0 and the ODI series 2-1. However, they will travel without Jos Buttler, who is recovering from a hamstring injury, while Jofra Archer has been rested following a busy summer.

Jos Buttler misses out as Jofra Archer gets a rest

Buttler will not be part of the squad after suffering a hamstring injury during the recent series against Sri Lanka. His absence leaves England without one of their most experienced white-ball batters as they prepare for a challenging campaign in Pakistan. Archer has been left out as England continue to manage his workload.

The fast bowler has had a busy summer and will be given time to recover ahead of the upcoming international schedule. There is better news for Adil Rashid and Sam Curran, with both returning after recovering from their respective injuries. Rashid missed the recent series against Sri Lanka because of a hand injury, while Curran has recovered from a groin problem.

Mason Crane returns after eight-year England absence

Mason Crane has earned a recall to England’s ODI squad after impressing for Glamorgan across formats during the summer. The leg-spinner remains uncapped in ODIs, and last represented England in the fifth Ashes Test against Australia in Sydney in 2018. With the tri-series taking place in conditions expected to offer assistance to spin, Crane provides England with another specialist option in the bowling attack.

James Coles and Henry Crocombe have also been included after being part of England’s white-ball squads during the summer, although neither has made their international debut yet. Joe Root will continue his busy year with another place in the ODI setup, while Harry Brook will take charge of the side as captain.

England squad: Harry Brook (c), Gus Atkinson, Sonny Baker, Tom Banton, James Coles, Jordan Cox, Mason Crane, Henry Crocombe, Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Josh Tongue.
