At any given time, we’re spoiled for choice when it comes to Steam. Whether you’re a massive fan of survival games or pretty much any genre you can imagine, hundreds of games come out every year across every genre. Horror in particular has thrived in this arena, and ever since the streaming era kicked off in earnest, it’s been an even bigger draw.

Horror, in general, promises infinite possibilities. Whether it’s a traditional, grounded story like a thriller, a supernatural hunting adventure, or a full-on monster mash, you can play a different horror game every week and get something completely different out of each one.

That includes both AAA experiences like Resident Evil, and indie projects, which are currently thriving. Thanks to a new Steam listing, we know that The Edge of the Backrooms is slated for a release next year.

While we don’t have a firm release date yet, developer CosmicArcade has announced that The Edge of the Backrooms is slated for a 2027 Steam release. Taking a page from the greater “Backrooms” lore that swept the Internet and eventually became a feature film directed by Kane Parsons, this will take a similar tack.

Here’s the breakdown of what you’ll be doing beyond the concept of exploring backrooms: “The Edge of the Backrooms takes players into the deepest, most unnerving reaches of the Backrooms ever seen. Told through a found footage format, the story follows an astronaut who falls through a null zone on Jupiter’s moon, Europa. Due to its distance from Earth, this threshold reaches the farthest edges of the complex, where reality itself begins to disintegrate, and existential dread takes hold.”

The game features found-footage gameplay, which CosmicArcade aims to make “ultra-realistic,” along with multiple levels featuring “uncanny” locations. The game offers multiple branching pathways and endings, along with a horror-themed soundtrack. Based on the trailer live on Steam now, you can get a taste of what that’s like.

While the game has no death mechanic, “you’re not alone,” and it remains to be seen how that ominous warning plays out. The main content warnings include “blood and psychological horror scenes.”

To be clear, this is not an official “Backrooms” movie adaptation or tie-in game. According to the creator: “This is my own interpretation of the Backrooms. It takes inspiration from Kane Pixels’ series and The Complex: Expedition, but these projects are unrelated.” Given the story’s raw distance from Earth, there are possibilities abound, and the game’s screenshots showcase a variety of locales (or rooms, if you will).

Thanks to the film’s success, Backrooms adaptations have been taking off, especially on Steam and YouTube. There’s so much unexplored even with the film in the picture, and I can’t wait to see what people come up with.
