Prime Video’s new crime thriller Kill Jackie is already dividing critics ahead of its October series premiere.

Catherine Zeta-Jones stars in the series as international drug smuggler-turned-art dealer Jackie Price, who is targeted by a group of hitmen called The Seven Demons. Her past quickly comes back to haunt her, but she leans on those skills and sets out to defeat each member of the squad before they make a fatal move against her.

Kill Jackie premieres October 2 on Prime Video in international markets like the UK, Ireland, Netherlands, Turkey, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg and Canada, and on AMC+ in the United States. With just days to go, the series has now made its debut on Rotten Tomatoes, but critics are officially split with a score of 50%, as of September 29.

Some have praised Kill Jackie for being stylish and taking big swings; they also singled out Zeta-Jones’ performance. One critic even said the story was like Quentin Tarantino meets Guy Ritchie, with a bit of Killing Eve thrown in.

With a score of 50%, that means not everyone is on board with Kill Jackie, of course. Some of the more negative reviews claimed the narrative lacks focus, has no suspense or originality, and is way too cartoonish.

ScreenRant‘s Cher Thompson called Kill Jackie “wickedly smart, ambitious and fun,” despite some “hiccups” along the way.

Starring alongside Zeta-Jones in Kill Jackie are Daniel Ings, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Óscar Jaenada Hattie Hook, Darci Shaw, Raff Law, Enzo Cilenti, Christine Adams, Julian Rhind-Tutt, Karlis Arnolds Avots, Set Sjöstrand, Tadashi Ito, Sebastian Armesto, Julian Barratt, Gavin Spokes, Jonathan Cake, Bamshad Abedi-Amin, Bill Paterson and Ron Perlman.

Aside from appearing on-screen, Zeta-Jones also has a behind-the-scenes role as an executive producer with Peter Lawson, Jose Agustin Valdes, Tom Butterworth, Damon Thomas, Rebecca Dundon, Dante di Loreto and Jeffrey Levine. Conor Keane, Butterworth and Lawson created the eight-episode thriller, which adapts Nick Harkaway’s novel The Price You Pay, with Butterworth also serving as the showrunner and writer.

The comparison to Killing Eve from one of the reviews is very appropriate, as Thomas was also an executive producer and director on the Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer-led spy thriller.

Zeta-Jones is best known for her award-winning performance in the movie musical Chicago, which earned her an Oscar, SAG Award, Critics’ Choice Movie Award and a BAFTA. She also won a SAG Award for Traffic and starred in The Mask of Zorro, The Terminal, Ocean’s Twelve, Rock of Ages and The Gallerist.

On the small screen, Zeta-Jones’ credits include Feud: Bette and Joan, Prodigal Son, Wednesday and National Treasure: Edge of History.

As Wednesday season 3 continues filming in Europe, fans of the Oscar winner can see her back on the small screen in a new thriller. While critics are split on Kill Jackie, Prime Video and AMC+ subscribers will soon get to see for themselves and make their own opinions heard.

Kill Jackie premieres Friday, October 2 on AMC+ in the United States and on Prime Video in select international markets.
