Written by author Robert Jordan, with help from Brandon Sanderson as co-author of the final three installments, The Wheel of Time began its life as a series of high fantasy novels, beginning back in 1990.

However, it was perhaps its live-action television series that saw its popularity take off. Airing for the first time back in 2021 courtesy of Prime Video, the series lasted for three seasons before it was unceremoniously canceled, despite being met with rave reviews and being the recipient of multiple awards.

The cancellation caused uproar, with fans still campaigning for it to return to our televisions in the future. Whilst Prime Video has not confirmed that this will be the case, it seems as though The Wheel of Time is far from over, as fans can look forward to a genre-changing release.

The Wheel of Time Returns Next Year

Courtesy of Dire Wolf, War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time is the first board game inspired by the beloved series by Robert Jordan. Now available to support as part of a Kickstarter campaign, a massive 6,156 backers have already pledged a whopping $1,166,993 to the project, showing just how big this high fantasy fan base really is.

In the grand strategy board game, the story follows the epic “conflict between the forces of light and darkness, embodied in Rand al’ Thor, The Dragon Reborn, and his eternal nemesis, The Dark One.”

Players will step into those roles, wage war across a land of magic, ancient prophecies, and powerful armies, all whilst deciding whether to save the world, or destroy it.

Featuring tableau building, action selection, and area control mechanics, War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time tasks players with a thrilling struggle of conquest and survival courtesy of two unique modes: Hero and Epic. Whilst Hero is recommended for new players, Epic will see you manage massive armies and take to the field.

Not Long To Wait

With copies of War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time expected to begin shipping to pledgers in early 2027, you may have noticed that the Kickstarter campaign is no longer available to support. However, when it launches fully in the new year, you will be able to secure your copy.

Now, over on r/boardgames, The Wheel of Time fans have been discussing the brand-new board game, and whether they will be splashing the cash.

“The fact that I love both Dune Imperium and Clank gives me reason to back this alone,” one comment read, referring to previous board games by the same company. “Have not decided yet if I actually will, but the pedigree is there.”

Another said, “Wheel of Time is also one of my favorite IPs ever, and I love that the designer clearly loves the series. In the video on the page, I also love that he specifically said it’s strictly from the books and not the show (which sucked big time). But yeah, the gameplay descriptions are just generic board game terms that don’t give any real expectation of play. I’ll likely back it but definitely want to see actual gameplay before doing so.”

As mentioned, War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time begins shipping out to customers in 2027, and if you did not secure your copy, you will be able to upon its full launch, so fear not.
