Xbox Game Pass Gets Huge Fantasy RPG On September 15

Xbox Game Pass is getting a huge fantasy RPG on September 15, and if you’re a fan of the genre and its tropes, be sure to mark your calendar so that you can play this upcoming release for free using your subscription. There’s a lot going on with Microsoft’s gaming service this month. While we’re getting a ton of games, including Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, we’re also losing several titles on Xbox Game Pass on September 15, such as Cyberpunk 2077, Dead Cells, Spiritfarer, and Frostpunk 2.

While it is a devastating day for the service, there is a glimmer of hope. On September 15, the service is getting a huge new fantasy RPG that you’ll be able to play for free. The announcement was made via a post on the official Xbox Wire website. The post highlights all the games arriving on the service as part of the Wave 1 updates in September this year, and among them is a title that may have you hooked for dozens of hours on end.

The game in question is called RuneScape: Dragonwilds, an open-world multiplayer survival game set in the universe of RuneScape. The addition of RuneScape: DragonWilds to Xbox Game Pass was announced earlier this month and is scheduled for September 15. The game, which was officially released in April 2025, will be playable on Xbox Series X/S, PC, and via Cloud gaming. It will be available for members of the Ultimate, Premium, and PC Game Pass tiers.

This is, from a technical perspective, a day-one release on Xbox Game Pass. While it is available on other platforms, it’s currently in its early access period, and September 15 is the date of its Version 1.0 release. However, it’s not classified as a day-one release on the service, which is precisely why members of the Premium tier will also be able to play RuneScape: Dragonwilds once it is added to the catalog.

RuneScape: Dragonwilds is, first and foremost, a survival game, but it does have tons of RPG mechanics, including skill upgrades that allow you to tailor your gameplay experience. While farming resources, crafting items, and building bases are the backbones of the game, much like in a survival game like Valheim, you’ll also be able to face high fantasy enemies along the way in real-time combat.

A cool thing about RuneScape: Dragonwilds is that it incentivizes cooperative multiplayer, meaning that you’re better off playing alongside friends rather than alone. On top of that, PvP isn’t a big thing in this game, so you don’t have to worry about getting raided. This new addition to Xbox Game Pass is worth keeping an eye out for, especially if you like the idea of a fantasy RPG with survival mechanics.
