Alonso on Caicedo injury

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has provided a fresh injury update on midfielder Moises Caicedo following the 2-1 Premier League loss to Arsenal on the road.

The Blues suffered yet another defeat to the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium. They started brilliantly with a second-minute goal through Morgan Rogers, but Arsenal responded well with goals from Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard.

Chelsea could have conceded more, but goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez made some fine saves. After the game, Alonso was quizzed on Caicedo’s absence and whether he could be sidelined longer.

In response, the Spanish tactician said the club made a mistake by rushing the midfielder back against Brighton & Hove Albion, and he does not want to repeat the mistake again.

He said: “Not longer term, but we talk about assessing the risk. Probably last week [against Brighton], we took him too early, and I don’t want to make the same mistake.”

Caicedo initially picked up an injury before the season opener. He missed two matches before a substitute appearance against Brighton, where he suffered another setback.
