That palette happens to be the smartest thing you can pack, too. A coat in one of these shades works over everything else already in your suitcase, which is the real test of a travel coat: it’s not just outerwear, it’s the piece doing the most work in your whole trip.
A travel coat also has to pass a harsher test than the coat hanging by your front door. It needs to survive being folded, work with most of the shoes in your suitcase, handle surprise weather and still look presentable when you walk straight from baggage claim to dinner. That’s a different job than a coat you’re only wearing from your car to the office.

What Actually Makes a Coat Travel Well
Three things, in order of importance. First, it has to pack down without holding a crease — anything structured or bulky is a coat for home, not a suitcase. Second, it needs to work in a neutral, tonal color story — camel, chocolate brown, olive, black, navy — so it layers over whatever you already packed instead of forcing you to build outfits around it. Third, it has to earn its space: a rain layer that only works in the rain is dead weight for the other six days of the trip.
