Doomsday Finally Makes Sense Now

It’s finally clear why one of the greatest stars from Fox’s X-Men is missing from Avengers: Doomsday. Marvel Studios‘ Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious superhero movies ever made, and a huge part of that excitement comes from the return of the X-Men. Characters who helped define comic book movies in the early 2000s are getting another chance to suit up, and that’s a prospect that has generated enormous excitement.

The returning cast makes plenty of sense. Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine has already reappeared thanks to Deadpool & Wolverine, Kelsey Grammer’s Beast made a surprise return in The Marvels, and Patrick Stewart’s Professor Xavier made a fun cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. They are joined by Alan Cumming’s Nightcrawler, Ian McKellen’s Magneto, James Marsden’s Cyclops, and Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique. Bringing those characters back for a story centered on Doctor Doom, alternate realities, and collapsing timelines feels like a natural fit.

However, the celebration has also come with a few lingering questions. Several major X-Men characters have been noticeably absent from the announced lineup, creating some surprising omissions. A few of those absences are difficult to ignore given how important those mutants were to Fox’s movies.

One omission, in particular, has stood out. Considering her importance to the entire X-Men saga, her absence initially felt almost impossible to justify. Recent MCU developments, though, may have finally provided an explanation. It might not completely erase the disappointment, but it does make Marvel’s decision considerably easier to understand.

Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey Helps Explain Famke Janssen’s Absence From Avengers: Doomsday

When the cast for Avengers: Doomsday was revealed, one of the biggest surprises was the absence of Famke Janssen. Her portrayal of Jean Grey was one of the defining elements of Fox’s original X-Men franchise, spanning X-Men, X2: X-Men United, X-Men: The Last Stand, and The Wolverine. Even after the timeline complications introduced by X-Men: Days of Future Past, Jean remained one of the most recognizable mutant characters associated with that universe.

Because of that history, her exclusion from Doomsday initially felt strange. Jean Grey is one of the most important mutants in Marvel history, particularly when stories involving universe-ending power levels are involved. A multiversal Avengers movie without Jean naturally raised eyebrows.

That said, Marvel’s reveal that Sadie Sink is playing Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day changes the equation considerably. Even if Sink’s Jean doesn’t appear in Doomsday itself, Marvel has now introduced a brand-new version of the character who is clearly positioned as the franchise’s future. From a long-term storytelling perspective, it becomes more complicated to bring back Janssen’s version immediately afterward.

Marvel would essentially be asking audiences to invest in a new Jean Grey while simultaneously spotlighting an older multiversal counterpart in one of the biggest crossover movies ever made. That isn’t necessarily impossible. The MCU has successfully balanced multiple versions of characters before. Spider-Man: No Way Home featured three Peter Parkers, while Deadpool & Wolverine embraced alternate variants with enthusiasm. Still, those stories were built around the concept of multiple versions existing together.

With Jean Grey, Marvel may want audiences focused on Sink’s interpretation rather than dividing attention between the past and future of the character. If the studio believes Jean will become a cornerstone mutant moving forward, keeping the spotlight on the new version starts to make strategic sense.

Audiences can absolutely argue that Janssen deserved one final appearance alongside her fellow original X-Men stars. Given her contributions to the franchise, that’s a fair position. However, the existence of a newly introduced MCU Jean Grey at least provides a reasonable explanation for why Marvel might have chosen a different path.

Avengers: Doomsday’s Missing X-Men Cast Members Still Hurt

Even with the Jean Grey situation becoming easier to understand, Avengers: Doomsday still has some glaring X-Men omissions. What’s particularly noticeable is that many of the missing characters are among the franchise’s most prominent female mutants. Jean Grey isn’t returning. Rogue is absent. Storm is absent as well. Considering how central all three characters were to various X-Men stories, their exclusion stands out immediately when looking at the announced cast.

Storm’s absence may be the most surprising of all. Halle Berry’s version of Ororo Munroe appeared across multiple Fox films and became one of the franchise’s most recognizable heroes. Given Storm’s leadership role in the comics and her immense power set, she feels like exactly the kind of character who should be involved.

Rogue’s absence is equally disappointing. Anna Paquin’s take on the character was a major part of the original trilogy and remains closely associated with Fox’s X-Men era. While Rogue’s role fluctuated throughout the series, she was still one of the franchise’s most important mutant heroes.

The lack of these characters creates an imbalance that is difficult to ignore. Wolverine, Professor X, Magneto, Cyclops, and several other major male characters continue to receive attention, while some of the franchise’s most iconic female heroes are left on the sidelines. Of course, Marvel may still be keeping surprises hidden.

Avengers: Doomsday is exactly the kind of project where secret appearances and unannounced cameos are expected. Until the movie actually arrives, it would be unwise to completely rule out additional mutant appearances. Still, based on what has been officially revealed, the missing female X-Men remain one of the film’s biggest disappointments.

When Will Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey Return?

Assuming Marvel has bigger plans for Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey, the most logical place for her next major appearance is Avengers: Secret Wars. The upcoming crossover is widely expected to push the MCU’s multiverse storyline to its ultimate conclusion. If Doomsday is the event that brings realities crashing together, Secret Wars seems likely to deal with the aftermath and establish Marvel’s future status quo. That makes it the ideal project for introducing characters who will define Marvel’s next era.

Jean Grey fits that description perfectly. Marvel has spent years building toward a more complete integration of mutants into the MCU. While mutant characters have appeared in various forms already, the franchise still hasn’t fully established its own long-term X-Men team. Many expect Secret Wars to serve as the bridge between the Multiverse Saga and a future heavily focused on mutants.

If that happens, Sink’s Jean Grey could become one of the key figures leading that transition. Jean has been central to some of Marvel’s biggest mutant stories, including the Phoenix Saga, Dark Phoenix Saga, and numerous reality-altering events. Those themes align naturally with a movie expected to reshape the MCU itself not long after Avengers: Doomsday.
