Rangers crash out in shootout defeat

Rangers are out of Europe after a 4-3 penalty shootout defeat to Czech side Jablonec in the Conference League playoffs.

After Celtic’s humiliating defeat on Tuesday, Derek McInnes’ side were hoping for better but put in a similarly poor display on the road

Leading 1-0 from the first leg at Ibrox the tie was in Rangers’ hands but a fine goal from veteran Vakhtang Chanturishvili forced extra time.

And then missed spot kicks from James Penrice and Findlay Curtis proved decisive as the Glasgow side bowed out.

Lamin Jawo spurned an early chance for Jablonec when he fired wide of the right-hand post after being found by Jan Suchan, before Rangers’ Tochi Chukwuani was denied by a fine save from Jan Hanus at the other end.

Jawo and Matej Polidar were then thwarted by Ivan Pandur, with Suchan frustrated four minutes into the second half as his first-time effort was kept out by the Rangers goalkeeper.

Lawrence Shankland wasted a huge chance for Rangers as he headed wide when unmarked at a corner, and his profligacy was punished as Chanturishvili broke the deadlock on the night in style.

Chanturishvili fired a fierce effort across Pandur after a superb piece of skill inside the area.

Sebastian Nebyla shot over the crossbar from close range as Jablonec saw a chance to complete the turnaround in normal time go begging.

Extra time was a stodgy affair before an ultimately costly penalty shootout.

Elsewhere Motherwell went out after a 7-2 aggregate defeat to Freiburg.
