Melbourne Stars have appointed a new head coach for the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), with the Yorkshire icon taking charge ahead of the 2026-27 season. His arrival forms part of a broader restructuring of the club’s coaching setup and Cricket Victoria’s women’s programme.

New coach takes over as Melbourne Stars reshape coaching structure

The Melbourne Stars have turned to experienced English coach Richard Pyrah as they prepare for another WBBL campaign. The 43-year-old will replace Andy Christie as head coach, although Christie will remain closely involved with the Stars after moving into an assistant coaching role.

Christie’s responsibilities will also continue outside the WBBL, with the coach retaining his position as head coach of Victoria’s women’s team in the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL).

The reshuffle is aimed at creating greater alignment between the Stars and Victoria’s wider coaching structure while bringing a fresh perspective to the WBBL side. Stars general manager James Rosengarten believes Pyrah’s background across different levels and formats of cricket makes him a strong fit for the role.

“He is an experienced coach across both women’s and men’s programs and will bring a diverse skillset to the team,” Rosengarten was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

Strong experience in women’s cricket

Pyrah arrives with considerable knowledge of the women’s game. He is currently in his third season overseeing Yorkshire’s women’s programme, where he has gained extensive experience in developing players and managing a professional domestic setup.

He has also recently been involved with Sunrisers Leeds in The Hundred, working as an assistant coach during the 2026 campaign. That experience could prove particularly valuable at the Stars, given the links between the English competition and Australia’s domestic cricket ecosystem. Before establishing himself in women’s cricket, Pyrah also gained experience in the men’s game. Between 2015 and 2017, he worked in consulting roles with the Melbourne Renegades and Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League. His previous exposure to Australian domestic cricket means he will not be completely unfamiliar with the environment he is entering.

Familiarity with Annabel Sutherland could benefit Stars

One of the most intriguing aspects of Pyrah’s appointment is his recent connection with Melbourne Stars captain Annabel Sutherland. Sutherland enjoyed a standout campaign with Sunrisers Leeds in The Hundred Women, earning Player of the Season honours after helping the side reach the final. Sunrisers Leeds ultimately fell short against Trent Rockets, but Sutherland’s performances underlined her importance as one of the leading players in the women’s game.

Pyrah’s familiarity with Sutherland, along with his experience working with other Victorian players, could help make the transition smoother. For the Stars, the challenge will now be turning that familiarity and Pyrah’s coaching experience into results on the WBBL stage. With a new season approaching, his appointment gives the club an opportunity to begin a fresh chapter while maintaining some continuity within its existing coaching structure.
