2026’s New Batman Movie Is Officially Available To Watch At Home

Two years before Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II eventually makes it to theaters, DC fans have an exciting new Batman movie to watch at home. Given the Dark Knight’s four-year absence from the big screen, even as the DCU launched with James Gunn’s Superman, we’ve now hit the same length of time between The Dark Knight Rises and Ben Affleck’s debut in Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice. In other words, Batman fans are being starved.

The one saving grace has come from DC animation: since The Batman‘s release, there’s been no less than four animated movies starring the Dark Knight. Sadly, though, the quality has been a little uneven, and the defining trend of those movies has been an open embrace of Elseworlds stories and oddities. Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons came closest to a conventional Batman release, and he was a supporting character, with Merry Little Batman, Aztec Batman, and Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham were all varying degrees of strange. On top of that, Jensen Ackles’ version of Batman appeared in three Justice League movies, ending with the 3-part Crisis on Infinite Earths, but again, the critical response was underwhelming at best.

Finally, though, we have a Batman movie that feels more in the tradition of the original, hugely missed DCAU. Because, released today, Jeff Wamester’s Batman: Knightfall – Part I: Knightfall kicks off a new animated trilogy, launching a new era for DC animation, and giving DC comics fans an adaptation of one of the most iconic moments in Dark Knight history.

Batman debuted in Detective Comics #27 in May 1939. Cartoonist Bob Kane received sole credit for creating the character for the next 76 years — on every comic, every TV series, every film — despite being only half of the real partnership. His uncredited collaborator wrote much of the original story, designed the cowl and cape, invented the name “Bruce Wayne,” named Gotham City, and helped create the Joker, the Penguin, the Riddler and Catwoman. DC finally added his name to all Batman credits in 2015. Who?

02

Batman: The Movie — released in July 1966 between the first and second seasons of the ABC TV series, featuring the “Holy Whatever, Batman!” tone, the four super-villain team-up (Joker, Penguin, Riddler, Catwoman), the shark-repellent Bat-spray, and the Batmobile/Batboat/Batcopter — is generally considered the first theatrical Batman feature film. Two earlier 1940s movie serials don’t qualify as standalone features. Which actor played Batman in this first theatrical feature?

03

Batman: The Animated Series (Fox Kids, 1992–1995) — the Bruce Timm/Eric Radomski production with the deco-noir “Dark Deco” backgrounds painted on black paper — is consistently ranked by fans and creators as the definitive screen Batman. Its central performance is so iconic that the actor reprised it across 30 years, every DC Animated Universe series, and a dozen Arkham-series video games. He died on November 10, 2022, and DC essentially treated his passing as the death of Batman’s voice. Name him.

04

Jack Nicholson’s Joker in Tim Burton’s Batman (1989) earned him an estimated $60–$90 million from a film for which his actual on-screen salary was a fairly modest $6 million — making it, dollar-for-dollar, one of the most famously lucrative single roles in Hollywood history. He achieved this by negotiating an unusual deal structure that other actors immediately tried (and largely failed) to copy. What was it?

05

After Ben Affleck stepped down from his planned solo Batman film, Warner Bros. handed the project to a new director who reconceived it as a noir-detective serial-killer story modelled on Se7en and Zodiac, runs 2h 56min, casts Robert Pattinson as a brooding second-year Bruce Wayne, and gives Paul Dano’s Riddler a Zodiac-style cipher gimmick. The Batman (2022) grossed $772 million worldwide. Who directed it?

06

Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin (1997) — with Bat-nipples on the suit, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Mr. Freeze spitting ice puns (“Let’s kick some ice!”), Uma Thurman’s Poison Ivy, Alicia Silverstone’s Batgirl, and an estimated $238 million box-office failure on a $125 million budget — is widely regarded as one of the worst superhero films ever made. It killed the live-action Batman franchise for eight years until Batman Begins (2005). Who played Batman in it?

07

Cesar Romero’s Joker on the 1966–1968 ABC Batman series — white grease-paint, green wig, red lipstick, manic giggle — remains one of the most-cited comedic TV villains in American history. Romero, a leading-man matinée idol since the 1930s, agreed to the role on one condition: he refused to do a specific thing for the makeup. You can still see what he refused if you look closely. What did Romero refuse?

08

Todd Phillips’s Joker (2019) — the standalone, R-rated, $1.07-billion-grossing Joaquin Phoenix vehicle that exists outside any DC continuity — was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, the most of any comic-book-derived film at the time. It won Best Actor for Phoenix. It also won exactly one other Oscar that night. Which?

Batman: Knightfall – Part I Is Out Now – Where To Watch & What It’s About

Batman Knightfall Thumbnail

Already picking up positive reviews, Batman: Knightfall – Part 1 adapts notorious 1990s DC Comics arc “Knightfall,” conceived by Dennis O’Neil, Chuck Dixon, Doug Moench, and Alan Grant after the original idea for Azrael was pitched by Peter Milligan. A three-part event that is consistently rated as one of the best Batman graphics of all time, Knightfall turned Bane into a genuinely iconic villain. The first part of the trilogy sees Bane free all of Arkham Asylum’s maximum security inmates to overwhelm Batman as part of his plan to break the Bat.

As later adapted into Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, the fight between Bane and Batman culminates in the villain breaking Bruce Wayne’s back, putting him out of action. As he recovers, he calls on Azrael – Jean-Paul Valley – to replace him as a stand-in protector of Gotham, leading to a final confrontation with Bane that tests his moral core and kicks off a dark new era for Batman.

Sadly, Batman: Knightfall – Part 1 isn’t playing in theaters, but is instead available to buy digitally from VOD services like Prime Video right now. Fans of physical media can then buy it on 4K UHD and Blu-ray on September 8, and while a streaming date isn’t set, it will no doubt debut on HBO Max after the initial release window.

Knightfall Brings Back A Former Batman Actor After 5 Years

Of course known for his Marvel role as Blackbolt in Inhumans and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and as Captain Pike in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Anson Mount debuted as Batman in 2021’s Injustice. While it was divisive release, criticized for abandoning the source material (needlessly), Mount’s performance drew praise, and he returns after five years away to play Bruce Wayne again in Knightfall. He takes over from Jensen Ackles.

Alongside him, Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s Michael Mando plays Bane, Halo‘s Pablo Schreiber debuts as Azrael, and David Dastmalchian continues his rich vein of playing DC villains by voicing The Riddler.

What To Know About Batman: Knightfall Parts 2 & 3

While not quite as highly-rated or instantly iconic as the first part, Knightfall’s second and third chapters – Knightsquest and KnightsEnd – continue to follow Valley’s tenure as Batman and his battle to stay in touch with reality. The second chapter sees Azrael become increasingly violent, alienating Tim Drake and pushing him away, and seeking to outperform Bruce Wayne as Batman. It’s essentially a morality tale on why Bruce Wayne was always right to be Batman, and not everyone else should be.

Knightsend brings the story to a close, with Valley fully losing his grip on reality and his own mind, and seeking revenge for the murder of his father. Bruce is rehabilitated (with the help of Lady Shiva), and the story comes to a head with an epic battle. That will be worth the wait, but at this stage, there’s no firm news on when we can expect Batman: Knightfall – Part II: Knightquest or Part III: KnightsEnd will follow Knightfall onto digital and 4K. It won’t be too long, though: Part II is expected to release later in 2026, with the final part confirmed to release in early 2027.
