Virgil van Dijk has backed Liverpool’s recruitment team to make the right calls before the summer transfer window closes next week.

Liverpool have already added Jeremy Jacquet, Ronald Araujo and Víctor Munoz this summer, but Andoni Iraola is still looking for another attacking option.

Paris Saint-Germain forward Bradley Barcola is reportedly the club’s leading target, although any further additions will have to be completed before the deadline.

Van Dijk was asked about the situation after Liverpool fought back twice to draw 2-2 with Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday.

“Everyone wants to see quality arrive regardless,” the Liverpool captain said.

“I fully trust the club and the board to make the right decisions. That’s the only thing I can say.

“Let’s see what they do.”

Van Dijk calm despite lack of improvement

The Netherlands international also played down any suggestion that Liverpool’s players are putting pressure on the club to spend more.

Instead, Van Dijk believes the focus inside the dressing room should be on improving after a disappointing campaign last season.

“Regardless of what happens, we are Liverpool and we have to give everything,” he said.

“For us, we have to show a reaction from last year. We have nothing to prove to the outside world, in my opinion. It is to ourselves.”

Liverpool were forced to settle for a point on Sunday after twice falling behind, with Dominik Szoboszlai converting a late penalty to earn a draw.

Van Dijk felt there were encouraging signs in the performance but acknowledged that Iraola’s side still have plenty to work on.

“It is so early in the season that if we start panicking regardless of what could have happened today then we won’t be in a good place,” he said.

“It is down to us to make sure we improve quickly, and that is what we try to do on the training ground.

“There were some good things, but also things that we have to improve.”

“We need a squad that’s able to compete on all four fronts… Let’s see what the last couple of weeks of the transfer window will bring.”

New season, new start

With the new season only beginning, Van Dijk believes there is little value in dwelling on what went wrong last term.

The defender instead wants Liverpool to concentrate on adapting to Iraola’s methods, with the squad working extensively on the training ground to meet the new manager’s demands.

“Last year it was very unacceptable, but that was last year,” Van Dijk added.

“I don’t want to talk about that – we are looking forward and looking to improve.

“Hopefully next week it will be very close to what Andoni Iraola wants us to do. Like I say, we work on it every day.

“We do long hours on the training ground and that will only benefit all of us, including our loyal and trusted supporters.”
