Nagelsmann apologised for Germany goalkeeper demotion, reveals Baumann

Germany goalkeeper Oliver Baumann revealed Julian Nagelsmann “was sorry” for how things turned out at the World Cup.

Baumann was set for a major role at the 2026 World Cup after starting in all six of their qualifying matches, as well as their two warm-up matches.

However, the 36-year-old did not play a single minute at the tournament after Manuel Neuer reversed his decision to retire from international football.

Neuer previously called time on his Germany career after Euro 2024, but made a comeback for the World Cup.

In the end, Germany were knocked out in the round of 32 by Paraguay following their first-ever penalty shoot-out defeat in the competition.

Nagelsmann has since been replaced by Jurgen Klopp, but the coach still settled the matter with Baumann.

“He [Nagelsmann] was sorry about how everything turned out in the end,” Baumann said.

“I spoke with Julian ten days ago. We had already agreed to talk on the phone. Then we talked for almost an hour. I told him everything that was important to me.

“Of course, it was hard to swallow. I had this big goal.

“But I managed to give the team a lot of energy [from the substitutes’ bench]. I think I laid the foundation from my side so that nothing stands in the way of success.”

Baumann will now look to return to being first-choice goalkeeper when Klopp takes charge of his first game against Netherlands on September 24.
