Signing Bradley Barcola would not make up for the loss of Mohamed Salah, in the eyes of former Liverpool centre-back Jamie Carragher.

For the first time since 2016-17, Liverpool are going into a season without Salah in their ranks, after the Egyptian reached an agreement to leave Anfield as a free agent.

They have already secured the signings of French centre-back Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes and Spain forward Victor Munoz from Osasuna, but further reinforcements are still on the cards.

Barcola has been touted as a target for several clubs, Liverpool among them, with Paris Saint-Germain reportedly demanding €170m (£145m) for the 23-year-old.

Barcola scored 13 goals in 49 outings for PSG in 2025-26 (not including the Club World Cup), with only Ousmane Dembele (20) and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (19) finding the net more often for the European champions.

He also ranked third in PSG’s squad for dribbles attempted (156) and goal-ending carries (five), while only Kvaratskhelia (87) registered more take-on ending carries than his 79. Barcola also racked up 54 shots following carries – the most by any PSG player.

However, Carragher noted that Barcola played 73% of his total minutes last season on the left flank, with 8% being played in central areas and the remaining 19% being played on the right. 

And given the current make-up of Andoni Iraola’s squad, Carragher feels Liverpool need to prioritise a right winger. 

“He’s a great player, there’s no doubt about that – I’d love to get Barcola at Liverpool, but he’s a left winger for me,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“Liverpool’s big thing that stands out like a sore thumb right now is replacing Mo Salah, a right winger. 

“And I don’t think Liverpool have got anybody really in the squad who looks fully comfortable playing right wing.

“They probably have at least four players in the squad, before Barcola joins, who could play on the left-hand side comfortably.

“Now, I’m not saying any of those players are better than Barcola. But in terms of the balance of the squad, it’s not the position Liverpool need right now. 

“They need a right winger. But if you’re saying to me, do I want Barcola to come and Liverpool to sign a right winger as well? I’d be absolutely delighted, but players would have to move on. Of course, they would.

“But right now, I felt this summer would be about replacing Mo Salah. Barcola doesn’t replace Mo Salah.”

Salah made 315 Premier League appearances for Liverpool, the fifth-most for the club behind Jamie Carragher (508), Steven Gerrard (504), Jordan Henderson (360) and Sami Hyypia (318). 

He is also one of just 10 players to be both the leading goalscorer and the top assister for a club in the Premier League, netting 191 goals in the competition for Liverpool while teeing up 93.

He has been in talks with Turkish Super Lig side Besiktas, though the Istanbul club have said those negotiations are now on hold due to financial demands from Salah’s advisors.
