Interview With The Vampire Sets Exciting New Release In September

The 1994 film Interview with the Vampire can be experienced in a brand-new way starting this fall.

Based on Anne Rice’s 1976 book, Interview with the Vampire grossed $224 million at the box office and earned positive-to-mixed reviews from critics, who gave it a 66% score on Rotten Tomatoes; the audience rating is noticeably higher at 86%. During award season, the movie received two Oscar nominations for Best Art Direction and Best Original Score.

Now, 32 years later, Interview with the Vampire is about to come out on 4K Blu-ray, with the release date set for Tuesday, September 22. The film is getting a new 4K restoration presented in Dolby Vision/HDR and a Dolby Atmos audio track.

Special features include three featurettes (Eternal Night and Deadly Light; Interview with the Vampire: Creating the World; and Lestat, Louis and the Vampire Phenomenon); an audio commentary by director Neil Jordan; an introduction by Jordan, Rice and cast member Antonio Banderas; the In the Shadow of the Vampire documentary; and deleted scenes.

Some of these features have existed on previous physical releases, but the first two featurettes are brand-new to the 4K Blu-ray.

Fans also have the option of buying a limited edition steelbook of the Interview with the Vampire 4K Blu-ray with the same exact special features but different cover art. Both versions also come with a digital code.

Interview with the Vampire centers on Lestat turning Louis into a vampire, and the two teaming up to turn Claudia as well. The story is told from the perspective of an interview that Louis takes part in with a reporter.

Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Kirsten Dunst play Lestat, Louis and Claudia, respectively, and their co-stars are Banderas, Stephen Rea, Christian Slater, Domiziana Giordano and Thandiwe Newton. Dunst earned a Golden Globe nod for her performance in the Best Supporting Actress category.

Filmmaker Neil Jordan directed the movie from a script by Rice herself, with David Geffen and Stephen Woolley serving as producers.

After publishing the novel Interview with the Vampire, Rice expanded the universe with an entire book series called The Vampire Chronicles, which includes The Vampire Lestat, The Queen of the Damned, The Tale of the Body Thief, The Vampire Armand and Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis.

In recent years, the books have been adapted for the small screen after Rice handed over the adaptation rights to AMC. Instead of Cruise and Pitt, Sam Reid and Jacob Anderson are currently playing Lestat and Louis in this new interpretation, which has earned rave reviews from critics and two Creative Arts Emmy nominations.

The third season, titled The Vampire Lestat, recently ended, and a fourth installment, Queen of the Damned, is in the works. Until the AMC series returns, though, fans of the horror franchise can revisit the original adaptation with the upcoming 4K Blu-ray release of Interview with the Vampire.
