Back in June, the long-rumored The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake was finally announced by Nintendo. Slated for a holiday 2026 release, it will offer players the chance to experience the beloved 1998 in all of its next-gen glory, launching alongside significant visual and gameplay enhancements, a semi-realistic art-style, and a 1:1 graphical upscale.
Announced alongside a very brief teaser trailer, it is clear to see that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake will look a lot different to the original release, but that has not stopped some fans from worrying that Nintendo will release a 1:1 remake.
As with every remake of a beloved title, it is hard not to feel some concern. Will it manage to capture the magic of the original whilst enhancing it to the power of next-gen? Will it launch alongside extra content? Or will it just be a cash grab for Nintendo that preys on fan’s nostalgia?
All of this remains to be seen but, for now, one fan over on r/switch2 asked for our opinion on The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake. “Will you be disappointed if the Ocarina of Time Remake is a 1:1 remake with no major gameplay changes?” The post reads. “Similar to the Star Fox 64 remake; massively enhanced visuals, new cutscenes and voice acting, but minimal new content and no changes to the overworld or dungeon design.”
With over 400 comments, it is safe to say that fellow fans have their own thoughts and concerns over the highly anticipated remake, with the first comment reading, “I feel like it would be a total waste of time and resources if they did that. They are doing too much with it for it to be an exact remake. They already did that with 3D.”
Another said, “I won’t be disappointed either way. I want to enjoy the game. I’ll take it for what it is and, even with faults, just focus on what I like. I just don’t have it in me to be pessimistic anymore.”
However, as one user shares, it is worth considering that Nintendo has a lot riding on its shoulders, especially considering that Ocarina of Time is considered one of the greatest video games of all time. As they shared, “I will be disappointed if it isn’t both a completely familiar and 100% faithful recreation of my exact memories of how it felt when I played it the first time, and yet somehow also a completely novel experience that reignites my sense of adventure and discovery, while accounting for all the advances in technology, game design, scope, and UI that have occurred in the intervening years.
“Any deviation from these mutually exclusive feelings will make me completely irate for failing to meet my totally reasonable expectations.
Or I don’t know, maybe it just won’t be for me, but some kids who never got to play the original when it came out will get to enjoy it, and that’s fine.”
At the time of writing, we do not have all the information about The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, but with its launch arriving later this year, it will not be long until we learn what to expect from one of 2026’s most anticipated releases.
