God Of War Fans Divided On Controversial Kratos Recast

Few video game characters would be difficult to cast based on how they look or what their talent level is like as an actor, but casting Kratos in a God of War movie seemed impossible. To be successful, Amazon Prime Video’s God of War TV show needs to have someone who’s believably tall, chiseled yet muscle-bound, and able to marry rage with stoicism while also being loving and paternal.

The TV show ultimately cast The Walking Dead and Sons of Anarchy’s Ryan Hurst. Unfortunately, Hurst is no longer playing Kratos, and whoever is recast in his stead will have massive shoes to fill.

After Ryan Hurst tore his bicep performing a stunt while filming the upcoming TV show, as per Deadline, the role of Kratos is apparently being recast. This is obviously terrible news for Hurst, who’s been injured and lost the role in one fell swoop, and it’s a tragedy for fans who believe there is no better choice for Kratos than him.

Many fans are debating as to why the role needed to be recast, rather than simply waiting for Hurst to recover, though it’s difficult to say how extensive or demanding his recovery may be. Either way, it’s devastating.

User kojimahead writes, “I was already quite pessimistic on this adaptation but now I’m a firm believer of it being an imminent stink fest. Feel for Hurst,” while realradec writes, “This is crazy and I feel so bad for Ryan Hurst. Just an unfortunate situation all around.”

User NebsGoodTakes says that “stunt doubles literally exist to avoid this exact scenario,” and it does call into question what the stunt was that Hurst performed, as well as what precautions could’ve been taken in order to prevent such a brutal injury from occurring.

So Ryan Hurst as Kratos is now lost media,” says user Ancomraven2, reflecting on the fact that we’ve seen one official image of Hurst as Kratos and it will be retconned by whoever is recast in the role. Sadly, we’ll never know if Hurst would’ve been a perfect Kratos, and it’ll be interesting to see if footage from the four episodes he had reportedly already filmed ever see the light of day.

User Lilzupiter and others are worried about who Hurst’s replacement is going to be. Despite having played an antagonist opposite Kratos in-game, Hurst wasn’t necessarily on many fans’ minds when he was announced to be playing Kratos in live-action, and thus, there’s no way to tell who Amazon Prime Video may have as a backup for God of War.
