Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin joined that conversation with a bold assessment, explaining why one particular player stands apart from the rest when it comes to India’s long-term success.

Ashwin explains why one player stands above the rest

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ash ki Baat, Ashwin stated that while Indian cricket has produced legendary batters like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, the player he believes India can never truly replace is premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah.

Ashwin pointed to Bumrah’s influence whenever he is part of the playing XI, highlighting how his presence changes the complexion of a match even before he begins taking wickets. According to the veteran spinner, Bumrah’s unique skill set makes him one of the rarest cricketers in world cricket.

“Jasprit Bumrah’s difference will always be there. We can paste Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma on the posters, all that is fine. But I am saying the fact is that Jasprit Bumrah cannot be replaced in my head. It is undeniable. Finding a replacement for Jasprit Bumrah is not difficult; it is impossible,” Ashwin said.

Match-winning return strengthens Ashwin’s argument

Bumrah returned to India’s ODI setup for the first time since the 2023 World Cup final and immediately reminded everyone why he is regarded as one of the world’s finest fast bowlers. Although he went wicketless during the powerplay, he consistently troubled England’s top order with his pace, accuracy and trademark hard lengths.

His sustained pressure eventually paid off after Gurnoor Brar removed both England openers, allowing Bumrah to strike soon after. The right-arm pacer dismissed Harry Brook with a sharp outswinger that generated extra bounce and found the edge, with Rohit completing a comfortable catch at first slip.

While Bumrah’s spell set the tone, India’s chase was anchored by captain Shubman Gill, who retired hurt after scoring an unbeaten 80. Shreyas Iyer added valuable runs before Axar Patel (57*) and Washington Sundar (52*) shared an unbeaten century partnership to guide India to a comfortable six-wicket victory with 28 balls remaining.
