Project Hail Mary Is Officially Available On Prime Video

Project Hail Mary has finally landed on Amazon Prime Video, 15 weeks after its theatrical release. Drew Goddard adapted the screenplay for Project Hail Mary from Andy Weir’s 2021 novel of the same name. The surprisingly feel-good story follows a science teacher (Ryan Gosling) who wakes up alone in space and slowly recalls his mission to save Earth’s sun from impending destruction. The hit movie is expertly directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, known for their work on the Spider-Verse movies.

MGM Amazon Studios released Project Hail Mary in theaters in March 2026 to resounding acclaim. The movie earned a 9/10 from Screen Rant and a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences rushed to theaters amid growing buzz, and Project Hail Mary quickly broke several box office records. The Gosling blockbuster made $683.5 million worldwide, with earnings fairly evenly distributed between domestic and international ticket sales (via Box Office Mojo). This performance made Project Hail Mary the highest-grossing Amazon movie of all time and the third highest-grossing movie of the year so far.

At-home viewers have had to exercise great patience as this hit film took longer than expected to enter streaming. As of Friday, July 3, Project Hail Mary is officially available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

Why Project Hail Mary Took So Long To Release On Prime Video

Project Hail Mary took an unexpected route to streaming. While MGM Amazon Studios generally ushers movies swiftly from theaters to Prime Video, Project Hail Mary’s impressive box office performance secured it an unprecedentedly long theatrical stint.

MGM extended Project Hail Mary‘s initial theatrical window about a month after its release, amid consistently high ticket sales. Nearly eight weeks after its debut, the film became available through Premium Video on Demand (PVOD) but remained in theaters. In total, Project Hail Mary had a 90-day theatrical window before moving to streaming (SVOD). A 90-day window was the standard pre-2020, but a 45-day window has become the new norm.

The Amazon MGM Studios blockbuster became available to stream on June 18, though not on Prime Video. Unexpectedly, MGM first routed the film through MGM+, an Amazon Prime add-on. A Deadline report later explained that Project Hail Mary was greenlit with MGM+ contracted as its Pay-one streaming home. As such, the film was always set to premiere on MGM+ following its theatrical window. Films that transition directly from theaters to Prime Video are monetized under an entirely different greenlight model.

Following its lengthy theatrical run and initial pay-one window, Project Hail Mary could finally enter on Prime.

Project Hail Mary will be in good company on Prime Video, among an extensive library of similar sci-fi movies.

It is now streaming alongside its sister movie, The Martian. This 2015 sci-fi was based on another Andy Weir novel and was also adapted by Hail Mary writer Drew Goddard—making it the perfect double feature. Lord and Miller did not helm this one, but Ridley Scott provides excellent direction.

Christopher Nolan’s award-winning Interstellar is streaming on Prime as well. The 2014 epic bears a striking resemblance to Project Hail Mary as it, too, follows a scientist (Matthew McConaughey) who ventures into space to save Earth’s people. Interstellar remains one of Nolan’s best features to date.

Prime subscribers can also check out Moonfall and The Tomorrow War. Though not as highly rated, these flicks are in the same vein as Project Hail Mary and offer high-action space adventure. Outside Prime, Amazon Video has an endless library of space epics available to rent or buy. Once audiences have watched—and re-watched—Project Hail Mary, there is still a wealth of stellar sci-fi content on Amazon and beyond.
