Why Summer Is the Best Season at Merriweather Lakehouse

The hotel sits on seven wooded acres right on 27-acre Lake Kittamaqundi, and the floor-to-ceiling windows that impressed us so much in winter have an entirely different effect in summer. The lake is alive. The 1.4-mile trail fills with walkers and joggers from early morning. The rooftop pool opens up with wide views of the water below. And the lake light in the evenings, golden and low across the water, is something you want a balcony for. It’s why we consider this property one of the most romantic hotels in Maryland.
Columbia’s Lakefront District is also in full swing all season, hosting outdoor festivals, food events, and community gatherings throughout the summer months. You can walk to most of it from the front door.
🎵 Walk to Legendary Live Music
Merriweather Post Pavilion, recognized by both Billboard and Rolling Stone as one of America’s best outdoor amphitheaters, is a 15-minute walk from the hotel. The venue has hosted legendary acts for over 50 years, from Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix to today’s biggest names. Walking to a summer concert and walking back is the whole point. Book your room when you buy your tickets.
Fourth of July at Merriweather Lakehouse: America’s 250th Birthday

We were here for July 4th in 2024 and it is one of those nights that is hard to explain without sounding like you are overselling it. The fireworks go off right across the lake. The reflections on the water, the booming sounds, the explosions filling the sky were incredible. We watched from the rooftop pool deck, then moved to the lāk patio, and finished the night on our own lakefront balcony. Three completely different views of the same show. We’ve been to a lot of fireworks. This one was spectacular.
This year the hotel is celebrating America’s 250th with one of the best setups in Howard County. Here is everything happening and how to be part of it.

The Rooftop Pool and Eagle Watch Lounge

Open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, the rooftop pool is where summer at Merriweather Lakehouse clicks into place. The pool overlooks Lake Kittamaqundi directly below, with the wooded hills of Howard County beyond. It is a view that makes the water very easy to stay in.
Right alongside the pool is the Eagle Watch Lounge. Get there in the late afternoon when the light starts moving across the lake and you will not want to leave. It fills up on summer weekends, so book early if you are visiting Friday through Sunday in July or August.
💡 Summer Pool Tips
- Head up early on summer mornings for a quiet swim before the pool fills.
- The rooftop views are best at golden hour, roughly 7 to 8 PM in June and July.
- Year-round pool access is available next door at THE Pearl Spa if you are visiting outside of the pool season.
Lake Kittamaqundi in Summer: A Lakefront Playground

The 27-acre Lake Kittamaqundi that wraps around the hotel is at its liveliest in summer. The 1.4-mile paved trail is ideal for morning runs or evening strolls, and it connects to the larger Columbia trail network if you want to extend your walk out to Wilde Lake for a 2.9-mile round trip.
Summer is also prime time on the water. The lake sees kayakers and paddleboarders throughout the season, and the lakefront area hosts festivals and community events most weekends. Lake Kittamaqundi is known for its sunsets, and with the Rookery Bar steps away and benches lining the trail, you have no shortage of places to watch one.
🦅 Birding in Summer
The lake is active with birds year-round, but summer brings its own cast of characters. Great blue herons are regulars, ospreys hunt over the water throughout the season, and the wooded trail edges hold warblers and flycatchers. For a dedicated birding experience, see our complete guide to a birding getaway at Merriweather Lakehouse with species lists and best viewing times.
Dining at lāk, The Rookery, and Osprey Cafe

We ate at lāk in winter and it was one of the better hotel restaurant meals we have had. In summer, those floor-to-ceiling windows are doing even more work, with the lake fully lit and the Merriweather District active just outside.
What to Order
lāk Restaurant: The Maryland crab cakes served over forest mushroom risotto with lemon garlic aioli are the signature dish, and since there is nowhere better to eat Maryland crab than Maryland, do not skip them. The chicken piccata and fried calamari are equally solid. Dessert comes from Pastry Chef Brian Holland, a graduate of the International Culinary Center who spent over a decade at Baltimore’s Four Seasons. The apple crisp and skillet cowboy cookie sundae are both worth the splurge.
The Rookery Bar and Lounge: Opens at 4 PM. Good for a drink before or after dinner, with the best lake view in the hotel. The bar menu covers steak and cheese egg rolls, Bavarian pretzel sticks, and the full lāk dinner menu if you want something more substantial in a casual setting. Creative cocktails, quality spirits, and the best lake views in the hotel.
The Osprey Cafe: Gourmet Lavazza coffee and fresh pastries, including the chocolate croissants, which are worth the stop on their own. The morning after July 4th we wrapped up our stay here with coffee and fresh baked scones before heading home. It was the right sendoff. Take your coffee out toward the lake.
THE Pearl Spa: A Summer Wellness Escape
THE Pearl Spa is a short walk from the hotel and worth building time around. The 27,000-square-foot wellness center offers massages, body wraps, facials, and manicures, plus some experiences you will not find elsewhere: a halotherapy (salt) room, year-round pool and jacuzzi, steam room, sauna, cold plunge, and THE Great Abyss, a multi-sensory meditation experience combining vibrations, magnetic therapy, and layered music for deep relaxation.
Healing Waters Wellness Package
The hotel’s Healing Waters package is designed around a coordinated appointment at THE Pearl and includes:
- Plush robes and slippers for two at the hotel and at THE Pearl
- A curated healthy welcome amenity on arrival
- Sound machine, oil diffuser, and essential oils in your room
- Breakfast for two at lāk the next morning
- Late checkout at 1 PM

Summer Rooms: What to Book and Why

Summer is the busiest season here. Concert weekends and July 4th fill up fast, so book early.
Room Categories
Standard King Room
A solid starting point. One king bed, modern furnishings, some partial lake views.
Standard Double Queen Room
Great for families or friends traveling together. Two queen beds with the hotel’s signature lake house decor.
Lake View King Room
Our top recommendation, and the room we stayed in for July 4th 2024. A king bed plus a private balcony overlooking Lake Kittamaqundi. In summer that balcony becomes an extension of your room, and on the Fourth it becomes one of the best fireworks seats you have ever had.
Lake View Double Queen
Two queen beds and the lake view balcony. Ideal for families who want the premium view experience.
Junior Suite
Separate living area with sofa, mini-fridge, and enhanced lake views. Good for a longer stay or a special occasion.
Presidential Suite
Spacious separate living room, dining area, canopy bed, and panoramic lake views. Limited availability. Book well in advance.

Summer in the Merriweather District

The hotel is ideally positioned in Columbia’s rapidly growing Merriweather District, which is at its most active in summer. Outdoor movie nights, live music, and community events fill the calendar from June through September. The District has a growing roster of unique dining options, with new restaurants opening throughout 2026.
A Whole Foods Market sits just a two-minute walk from the lake’s south end, good for grabbing picnic supplies to take down to the lake. The Mall of Columbia, with over 200 shops and restaurants, is just minutes away. Columbia has that planned-community-done-right quality that is surprisingly rare: easy to get around, genuinely pleasant, and never overcrowded.
