Marvel’s Wolverine is looming on the horizon, promising to be the PlayStation blockbuster of the year. Of course, it is still a few months away, and fans may not feel like waiting that long. While there have been a few X-Men and Wolverine-specific video games over the years, the majority of them fall into the fighting category, and not really narrative-focused RPGs, like Marvel’s Wolverine is. One would assume that leaves fans with few options for what to play in the build-up to Insomniac Games’ latest release.

Fortunately, there is actually a lesser-known X-Men RPG available right now that shares a lot in common with what Marvel’s Wolverine is trying to achieve. While not exactly the same, the RPG is the perfect choice for those who want to role-play as their favorite X-Men heroes, tussle with the team’s rogues gallery, and embark on epic adventures in the Blackbird. Considering it is available right now, this RPG is the perfect choice to play while waiting for Marvel’s Wolverine’s upcoming release date.

Back in 2024, Marvel released a critically acclaimed expansion for its Multiverse Role-Playing Game TTRPG centered around the X-Men. The TTRPG has had a number of massive expansions, including an upcoming Marvel Secret Wars RPG, but this may be the best option for those who are eager for Marvel’s Wolverine or simply have an affinity for the X-Men and its band of lovable, misunderstood outcasts. It brings together iconic X-Men characters, unique mechanics, and a series of adventure hooks to get players started on their mutant-focused journey.

Sporting 256 pages, the X-Men expansion for Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing Game includes pages all the included X-Men characters and associated characters, as well as new equipment specific to these characters, the aforementioned unique rules, different team rosters, and so much more. It covers every era of the team’s history, allowing players to play as characters from their favorite runs while facing off against iconic villains. Suffice it to say, so much effort has gone into making this ostensibly the definitive X-Men TTRPG experience.

Some of the unique rules specific to this expansion include Mutant Reputation, which sees mutants adversely affected in certain social interactions if the NPC or character they’re talking to is predisposed to disliking mutants. Small touches like these help give the expansion a lot of flavor, not unlike Marvel’s Wolverine’s unique gameplay mechanics that attempt to bring to life the titular and challenging-to-adapt character.

The X-Men expansion can be found for relatively low prices online, as it has been available since 2024. The core rulebook similarly doesn’t cost too much, although it is worth investing in that first and seeing if this TTRPG is a good fit before investing in any of the available expansions. Considering just how vast and ongoing the Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing Game TTRPG is, there’s plenty to get stuck into for prospective fans. At the very least, running games of just the X-Men expansion are sure to entertain fans as they wait for Marvel’s Wolverine to release later this year.
