Knee ligament injury confirmed for Ugarte

Uruguay and Manchester United have confirmed Manuel Ugarte has sustained a knee ligament injury, though the extent of his lay-off is not yet clear.

Ugarte had to be taken off during Uruguay’s 1-0 loss to Spain on Friday.

That defeat saw Uruguay crash out of the World Cup, with Cape Verde progressing from the group along with Spain.

And it has now been confirmed that Ugarte sustained a serious knee issue.

“Assessment of the injury is ongoing to determine the best course of treatment and the rehabilitation timescale,” United confirmed in a statement.

“Everyone wishes Manuel a successful recovery and we will be supporting him every step of the way.”

Ugarte made 24 appearances for United in all competitions in 2025-26.

The midfielder was reportedly in line to be moved on this summer, though this injury could put a transfer in doubt.
