Disney+‘s new arrival is a space opera that had a successful box office run, and it has now gone on to become a streaming juggernaut. Disney+’s roster of movies and TV shows is filled with genre releases, making it perfect for anyone looking for an exciting sci-fi project to watch. Among those are original projects and franchise entries.
Some of the biggest sci-fi movie franchises can be found on the streaming service, with both live-action and animated adventures available for subscribers. For instance, anyone looking for a Star Wars movie can find Lucasfilm’s entire collection on the streamer. In terms of Star Wars shows, there are mature spy thrillers like Andor, space Westerns like The Mandalorian, and many more.
That said, Star Wars is not the only major sci-fi movie franchise with exciting releases in recent years. Others include Dune, Blade Runner, Star Trek, and more. Where Disney+ is concerned, subscribers can look forward to watching the space operas directed by none other than James Cameron. He created the high-grossing Avatar movie franchise, whose latest film is now streaming.
Avatar: Fire and Ash was released on Disney+ on Wednesday, June 24. The movie is the third entry in Cameron’s Avatar franchise, following 2009’s Avatar and 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water. It finished its theatrical run with a box office total of $1.5 billion, making it a massive hit. Now, the space opera is finding that same level of success on Disney+.
Avatar Fire And Ash Is Trending Worldwide On Disney+
All it took was one day for Avatar: Fire and Ash to become the most-watched movie on Disney+ worldwide, according to FlixPatrol. The latest Avatar movie has surpassed quite a few fan-favorite films on the streaming service’s global charts. Right now, Avatar: Fire and Ash ranks higher than Hoppers, the 2026 Pixar movie that previously led the streamer’s rankings, as well as all four previous movies in the hit animated Toy Story franchise and even Toy Story 5 | A Special Look, the preview for the new release that is currently lighting up theaters everywhere, among others.
Avatar: Fire and Ash managed to rank as Disney+’s most-watched movie worldwide due to how many Top Tens it is currently leading in different nations. At the time of writing, Cameron’s latest Avatar movie leads the streamer’s charts in no less than 77 countries, which is simply outstanding for a film that was only released on Disney+ a couple of days ago. One of those is the United States. The $1.5 billion space opera initially debuted nationwide at 10th on the chart, before rising all the way to the top of the list. It shows no signs of slowing down.
Avatar: Fire and Ash deserves its streaming success. The movie serves as a whole new chapter for the space opera franchise, introducing new tribes, villains, machines, and brand-new Pandora mythology. It also has some of the franchise’s strongest performances, particularly Sam Worthington’s, and keeps the CGI level as high as it can go for movies these days. Avatar: Fire and Ash‘s streaming success also led to Avatar: The Way of Water experiencing a boost, now #9 globally on Disney+.
What Is Next For James Cameron’s Avatar Franchise?
Avatar: Fire and Ash was a massive box office hit, even if it did not pass the $2 billion mark like its predecessors. Now, it has also become a global #1 streaming sensation on top of that. Based on that overwhelming success, it would come as a shock if the space opera franchise called it a day after the third movie. Right now, Avatar 4 is dated for a December 21, 2029, release. That said, things could end up changing, as James Cameron revealed in May that he is working out how to make the next movie differently.
According to the director, he is looking into ways to make Avatar sequels in “half the time for two-thirds of the cost,” which takes some time to figure out. As such, based on its box office and streaming success, Avatar 4 is likely to make its way to the big screen, only it might take a little bit longer than expected as Cameron works out how to change the franchise’s production pipeline after Avatar: Fire and Ash.
