Ruturaj Gaikwad opens up on the reasons behind Chennai Super Kings’ IPL 2026 failure

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season concluded with an unfamiliar script for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Renowned for their tactical brilliance and consistency, the five-time champions faced a bruising campaign, finishing with six wins and eight defeats. Missing out on the playoffs for the third consecutive year left the Yellow Army disheartened. Breaking his silence on the underwhelming campaign, skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad opened up to Sportstar regarding the core issues that crippled the franchise’s strategy. He detailed a cascade of internal struggles while reflecting on his own dip in form.

Ruturaj Gaikwad explains what went wrong for CSK in IPL 2026

In a candid assessment, Gaikwad strongly defended the squad, pointing out that external critics often overlook critical squad dynamics. The skipper emphasized that a massive wave of injuries completely unhinged their consistency. Core components of the line-up, including legendary wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni (calf and thumb injuries), bowler Nathan Ellis, and Ayush Mhatre, either missed the entire season or sat out crucial phases. Other impact players like Jamie Overton, Dewald Brevis, and Khaleel Ahmed also faced lengthy spells on the sidelines.

Gaikwad highlighted that losing four to five key individuals from an optimized playing XI creates a severe ripple effect that disrupts roles and matching options. Defending the franchise’s trajectory, he drew a direct comparison to the 2026 champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB):

Even if you look at the successful teams like RCB, if you take away three or four major players, it is definitely going to have an impact. Those are factors a lot of people don’t take into consideration.”

Acknowledging that the IPL is a results-driven tournament where fans expect standard-setting excellence every single year, Gaikwad asked the loyal fan base for patience. He assured them that the team is executing a rigorous long-term plan to navigate this transitional phase and return to their clinical best.

Gaikwad’s dismal run in IPL 2026

Compounding the team’s structural problems was the individual form of the captain himself. Typically a highly reliable anchor at the top of the order, Gaikwad struggled significantly to mirror his prolific numbers from previous iterations of the tournament. The added weight of tactical changes and shifting combinations clearly impacted his usual fluid rhythm.

His comprehensive performance breakdown for the IPL 2026 season illustrates a difficult run at the crease:

MetricStat
Matches / Innings14 / 14
Not Outs2
Total Runs337
Highest Score (HS)74*
Batting Average28.08
Balls Faced (BF)273
Strike Rate (SR)123.44
Milestones (100s / 50s)0 / 2
Boundaries (4s / 6s)29 / 12
Catches (Ct)5

Failing to cross the 400-run mark and operating at a strike rate of 123.44 meant that CSK often lacked the explosive, steady platform required to chase down big scores or post daunting totals. Despite flashing moments of class, such as his unbeaten 74, the inability to consistently convert starts mirrored the broader narrative of Chennai’s disrupted campaign. Heading into the next cycle, resetting both his personal batting baseline and restructuring the squad’s depth will be vital goals for Gaikwad.
