The Confrontation Officially Lands This Year

The Lord of the Rings fans are absolutely hyped about the official new open-world RPG set in Middle-earth from developers at Warhorse Studios, the team behind the beloved Kingdom Come: Deliverance games. Unfortunately, it’s likely going to be a bit of a wait before we actually get our hands on the game itself, though rumors suggest a 2028 release window is entirely possible given the studio’s development cycle on past projects.

That said, though fans have mixed views on the series, The Rings of Power Season 3 is set to debut later this year, with Andy Serkis’ The Hunt for Gollum coming in 2027, and the official new LOTR project from Stephen Colbert currently in the works. Further, there’s reportedly a second Lord of the Rings game in the works behind the scenes at Crystal Dynamics, though no official details have been released.

Still, if none of that is coming soon enough for you as a die-hard LOTR enthusiast, The Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation is an official new release slated to drop this year, available to pre-order right now (via Clownfish).

If you’re looking for something new to scratch your Lord of the Rings itch, The Confrontation is an officially licensed upcoming game available to pre-order now from Clownfish and Ghost Galaxy and created by renowned developer Reiner Knizia. It’s a brand-new re-release and upgraded tabletop game where “players take control of the forces of Sauron, seeking to find their master’s ring, or the forces of the free peoples of Middle Earth seeking to destroy Sauron’s ring in the fires of Mount Doom.”

The Confrontation is a re-release of the beloved 2002 original board game that comes in both standard and ultimate/deluxe editions, with the deluxe edition offering players an upgraded board game experience with a larger board to play on, bigger sculpted plastic model stands, new artwork, and “18 entirely new characters in addition to the classic characters found in the original.”

The ultimate edition exclusive characters give players an entirely new experience, or allow you to “mix the new and the old characters for an entirely different game.” Ultimate Confrontation also includes four new “Special Cards,” and is available for roughly $55 USD (or £45.99 in the UK via Clownfish).

This new reprint run of the iconic The Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation tabletop experience is sure to be a hit among longtime fans of the franchise and for board game enthusiasts who have been looking for an official re-release for an upgraded version, and are likely to sell out fast.
